Vista - DEP problem in vista ultimate 64

System is dual opteron single core, Highpoint 1820 raid 5 western raptors, another for photos another as scratch disk and a spare tyan 2885 mother board ultimate on raid 5 drive as c drive. System appears stable till I try to do anything as an administrator. I click on something to change something and system locks up. will only work after a hard restart till I click on something again, Where do I need to start looking for problem, system was stable with 2x the memory 4 gigs in XP 32 and 64 even thru the vista betas, I could only reinstall with 2 gigs of memory all ecc and registered all are matched. Office 2007 installed and updated, printers installed, networked etc. last crash I had message 3 days to activate, activate now. I clicked on activate now system locked up Help

Does this occur whenever you get a UAC prompt asking for approval of elevated privileges?

yes, I have sorted it out to a video driver problem for a MSI NX7600GS card, works fine in vga, does not work in elevated privaledges with new driver. I have a 4400 something card in that works better resolution but not past windows basic . Are there drivers for the card 7600GS that work when it does work score of 4.6 when it doesn't score of 1. I have ultimate I would love to get it to work. Thanks for the reply

I have all needed vista updates installed, office 2007 installed and updated . Both activated 3 gigs memory back in, 2 more sticks to go. It has been a long 3 days. Problem is in the video drivers from nvidia. If I stick to vga it works and boots and does not lock up, install proper drivers and it locks up at elevated privledges. sorry about the spelling. still to go when video driver problem is sorted out is wintv hvr 1600 pci card this was for an update. I have had 3 cards in and out of computer more times than I can count today. thanks again

fireman, which drivers are you using for the card? And it is possible that the drivers have gotten corrupted - try reading this Guru3D - Driver Sweeper and then downloading that tool, installing it, and then using it exactly as they prescribe....

scraped the cards changed to old ATI 9000 card barrowed. Installed fine runs fine needs new fan noisy but problem is solved. As for nvidia drivers tried them all. New ones old ones beta ones I could not shake the thing with elevaed command. They were all removed before install. Score dropped to 4 from 4.6 but it is stable and I am using default drivers. There may be better ones. Just happy to have thqt mess behind me. Thanks for the help. I now know to look for discarded ATI agp cards should be easy.

It was not DEP problem but a video problem. Mark this as solved swithched from Nvdia to ATI problem solved. All 4 gigs of memory installed capture card installed and working , all other hard drives installed I had been uninstalling drivers completely and reinstalling different one after reboot. It has been a long couple of days.


I am looking for recogmendations for an AGP ATI card that takes only one slot, more bells and wistles ok. Would like 10x if possible. Thank you for the help

I just installed Sapphire 3850 agp video card. rating from 4 on ATI 1900 card to 5.9 on card. The slow part of computer is the processors at 4.6 or 4.7 and memory at about the same. I have reached to top of where I can go. The single core opteron 244 are just fine for still photography even with very large files. Is anyone using dual core opterons with a higher rating. stability counts. I am not a gamer so I am at point of deminishing returns.
