Hi

I have the K9aPlatinum motherboard and I have Vista Ultimate x64. When I have 3gb of ram it runs fine (fine as can be), but when I have 4gb of ram it wont start windows. Have tried all kinds of slot combinations. Does Vista Ultimate x64 support 4gb of ram??? Any tips of what I can do?

The board supports 4GB, as does Vista 64-bit. Your problem might be either memory voltage and/or timings, or you might need a bios update?
MSI -- MICRO-STAR INT'L CO., LTD.

Looks like they fixed some memory issues with bios 1.6 and above? Have you tried flashing to the latest bios? What memory do you have; make and model number so we can find the proper voltages and timings.

I have had the same issue when installing Vista 64bit and yes 1 ram stick or 3 will work fine but 2 or 4 wont untill you install the patch thats fixes a perticular sys file that messes installs or running vista badly. It is suppose to be in the SP1 for vista as a fix but if it still does the same thing just install the hot fix.
I myself had run the hot fix then put SP1 on and once i had everything on then i put the other RAM back in with out any issues :) Have a Mygraine ATM and cant think of the patch name or link soz :(

Because you have SP1 installed (it is installed right?) you already have the patch. There are a couple things you can try. Before you start messing with the bios, you should remove all but 2 sticks of RAM; making sure to keep only the RAM from the same maker in the machine. Then you should go into the bios and load the optimized defaults, save your changes and then reboot. After that, the first thing I'd try is the MSI Live Update Tool: MSI -- MICRO-STAR INT'L CO., LTD. It says that it's Vista compatible; that it doesn't specifically state 64-bit compatibility may or may not matter? Before getting into other options, you should see if this works for you as it's the easiest way to get the job done.
Granted, I didn't get the chance to really dig into these sticks, but they're not the same. Anyhow, the point may be moot given a successful bios update.

If all else fails, follow the directions.

Replacing one kit of memory with another kit of memory, leaving you with again two mismatched kits, isn't going to solve your problem; nothing you've reported indicates that the memory is your problem. You've taken two steps forward and two steps back... ending right where you started.

There's no need to try and install a patch you've already tried to install. You'll only get the same message you got the last time you tried. The reason it won't let you patch is because you already have the patch in the form of Service Pack 1.

Yours isn't an uncommon problem. There are two suspects every time the 4GB Vista issue rears its head: the OS or the bios. Since you've already patched the OS to SP1, try working the bios angle.

That's not to say that trying to get two different kits to work might be problematic, but it's less likely an issue as the bios defaults to the lower of the two kit's timings; however, as MSI clearly stated in bold red letters, you will probably have to adjust the timings manually. This is going to be true whether you load Vista or XP.

It's going to be a little more complicated for you since you have two different 2GB kits. First download cpuid: CPUID

Next remove one kit. Boot the machine and run cpuid. Look on the SPD tab and there it will tell you what that kit's SPD (serial presence detect) timings are. You'll want the 400MHz timings. Write the timings down along with what each one is for, then repeat the process with the other kit. Also make a note of the voltage for each kit.

With any luck at all the timings and voltage will be similar. If so, just go into your bios and set them accordingly. If you have to adjust the voltage, do it before you adjust timings. Adjust vdimm to the appropriate amount, save your changes, exit out of the bios and restart the machine. Go back to the bios and then adjust memory timings.

But again, I really think you should consider learning how to burn a bios to a cd or invest $5.00 in a floppy drive. If timings were an issue, then you would not be able to run 3 sticks.

You're either talking to multiple sets of people / using multiple forums, or else you're not listening very carefully.

Read the post right before yours and see where Fumz said anything about flashing the BIOS....he didn't.

Now, if you told us what motherboard you have or checked yourself, you could see if you need a BIOS flash or not.

My first advice to you - ***slow*** ***down***.

Take it from the top, and *read* everything that has been posted carefully. don't read 2 or 3 words and go off half-cocked and start dong things.

Fumz already called you out on this last post -
If all else fails, follow the directions.
You cannot just start running through buying new hardware willy nilly and hope that it all works together because they both fit in the same slots. That's like saying you can put diesel in a gasoline combustion engine because the nozzles happen to fit....

This is not something that you want to take 5 seconds to fix - because a 5 second fix now 99/100 times leads to a 3 day fix further down the line. You need patience, and understanding.

You do have at least one thing going for you though - you like to ask questions - and that is a very good thing - it means there is still some caution in you....

Now, getting back to the issues - first install CPUID's CPU-Z, remove one set of RAM, and make a screen shot of the Memory tab. Now do the same with the other RAM installed (notice, in both of these instances, only one set is installed - we want one set and then then the set - not both sets together.

I am new to Vista, I recently purchased Vista Home Prem on a new laptop T9300 with 2Gig of RAM. When I first start up the computer, if I look in Task Manager, I am using about 800Mb of RAM and have 1.2G free. Gradually all the free RAM moves into cache and I am left with no "free" RAM. This happens within about 5 minutes. Is this normal?
If not, what is causing this and can it be fixed?

My Computer

I am new to Vista, I recently purchased Vista Home Prem on a new laptop T9300 with 2Gig of RAM. When I first start up the computer, if I look in Task Manager, I am using about 800Mb of RAM and have 1.2G free. Gradually all the free RAM moves into cache and I am left with no "free" RAM. This happens within about 5 minutes. Is this normal?
If not, what is causing this and can it be fixed?
That's normal. In the future, if you've got an off topic question it's best to start your own thread instead of hijacking another's... doing so just adds to the confusion.
