Optical Drive Woes

I am experiencing some interesting problems with an optical drive on a Lenovo T61p laptop running Vista Business x86 SP1. The problem is that the DVD drive will not auto play and while it recognizes that a disc is in the drive and the files on the disc, it does not recognize any executables even though they are there.

I am shying away from it being a hardware issue due to the fact that I have swapped the drive out with a known working drive and it does the same thing. And the oddest thing about it is that when a disc is in the drive a little apple pops up in the lower left hand corner of the DVD icon in My Computer:

Any ideas of what it could be?

I don't think the issue lies within the autoplay settings, it is more that autoplay will not work because the drive does not recognize any file that is executable.

Hi Mattj,

Try this. Put you CD/DVD into your drive. If windows does not see it then reboot the PC with the cd/dvd still in the drive. When you boot back up I am guessing you will be able to access the data on the cd/dvd drives then?

I have done that a few times. I can still see the data no problem, but windows and/or the optical drive has a difficult time seeing .exe's as executables. For example 'setup.exe' is seen as just as a generic file type.

Thats what I am wondering as well. Its not my machine, I am on the IT team that manages a few hundred laptops. The user installed iTunes but uninstalled it because of that problem. Yet he still has the problem. I definitely do not discount that it could be it, I was moreso wondering if anyone had ever seen something like that before. The only other program that made me wonder is one called XPlay 3, which is a iPod ripping software.

Thanks everyone for their help by the way. I really appreciate it.

Have you tried the CD in another machine? Maybe it is corrupt.

If the user installed iTunes then uninstalled it, use a System Restore to a date previous to the installation of iTunes and see if that helps.
