Icons Disappearing

I have tried rebuilding the Icon cache, but this didnt quite work for me...
Is it because im using 32 bit? :confused:

my icons are like disappearing and i have no idea what to do..

any help would do. thanks...

Could you please detail exactly what is going on? Windows has icons *everywhere* and some people refer to icons when they mean shortcuts, or files, or other things.

umm yeah well i went to safe mode and scanned my comp and it took out 3 viruses. then when i restarted the icons went back to normal so i was like wow yay! but then 3 minutes later the icons disappear again.

I did that before and nothing happened. I also rebuilt the icon cache except nothing happens.

also, my recycle bin keeps disappearing off my desktop...

could this be a virus?

Yeah i did a virus scan, nothing came out.
I use Norton Internet Security 2008.
Is there better virus scanners that I could use?

The Icons changed from a computer screen to rubbish bins now :confused:
and its getting a little fustrating.

do you have any more ideas to pull out of your sleeve? :huh:

) Right click icon after installing on desktop and assuring that it is a Vista style icon (Rgb, 256,PNG compressed, etc.)
2) Click GENERAL TAP
3) Select the "READ ONLY" ATTRIBUTES Box (check it)
4) Click OK
5) Wa-La!
Worked for me! Program Icons never disappeared except the URL Icons.
Drove me nuts for a week, almost reverted back to XP which I like because I don't have to deal with all the permissions crap!

Hi I had the same issue on a vista home premium laptop. after much testing found out the desktop icons would dissappear when the power management software inintialized. I looked at the power management profile and it was set to a low power conserving option. I changed it to a maxium power always on option and re tested the laptop with serveral reboots. All fixed ! no more disappearing icons.
it seems the speed at which the desktop icon loading and display was affected by the lower performance setting.
