    Computer Won't Stay Asleep (in sleep mode)

    When I put my Vista Home Premium computer to sleep, it unexectedly wakes up 15-20 minutes later for no reason. I have made sure that on all my devices including the network adapter (except the mouse) that the "allow this device to wake the computer" is unchecked. I have also tried removing Sidebar gadgets to see if one of those was the culprit. I also thought maybe it could be Windows Live Messenger but I set it to not start with Windows and the computer still popped out of sleep mode. I am running (Counter Spy's new) Viper program for anti-virus and anti-spyware and NetNanny 5.6 for as a parental content filter. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Jeff

    Shawn, thanks for the suggestion. I have tried most of the items on this tutorial list before, but not the powercfg command. I ran that command and found two items: my mouse and my High Definition Audio Controller. I have Realtek High Definition Audio which was listed under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. I right-clicked on the High Definition Audio item and selected properties and there is no Power Management Tab. However, under the Details tab and the Property Box, I selected Power Data and received the following results:
    PDCAP_D0_SUPPORTED
    PDCAP_D3_SUPPORTED
    PDCAP_WAKE_FROM_D3_SUPPORTED

    Power State Mappings:
    S0 -> D0
    S1 -> D3
    S2 -> unspecified
    S3 -> D3
    S4 -> D3

    Can you offer any advice on these settings?

    Jeff,

    I would not worry about those settings for the HD Audio.

    Check in Option Two in the tutorial above to make sure that the Multimedia settings is also set to Allow the computer to sleep.

    When the computer wakes up next time, type powercfg -lastwake in a command prompt to see if it can give you any helpful information on what woke up your computer last.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Re: Computer Won't Stay Asleep (in sleep mode)

    Thanks again Shawn. I checked my Multimedia settings and it is set to Allow the computer to sleep. So, I put the computer to sleep, it woke up in about 15 minutes, so I tried the powercfg -lastwake command.

    Here is the info I got back:
    Wake History Count -1
    Wake History {0}
    Wake Source Count -1
    Wake Source {0}
    Timer: Fixed Feature
    Timer Expired <RTC>

    Could this mean there is a timer set to come out of sleep mode? Thoughts?

    Jeff,

    That would be my assumption too, but I could not tell you from what though.

    Just as a test to eliminate this possibility, unplug your network conenction and put the computer to sleep to see if it wakes up afterwards.

    Shawn, I alos tried and check the BIOS settings, I re-started my computer and went into setup, Power, and the only realted item was Wake On Lan -S4 - Disabled. I will test unplugging the network connection and let you know the results.

    I unplugged my network connection, and put the computer into sleep mode. yet it came awake after about 10 minutes or so.

    Any other ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I just feel at this point that I have tried all the known tiops and advice.

    Thanks!

    Re: Computer Won't Stay Asleep (in sleep mode)

    You have to have a service that is waking the computer up, or a task that is waking the computer up.

    Check your Task Scheduler for any running teaks, and see if any of those tasks are set to wake the computer up.

    Re: Computer Won't Stay Asleep (in sleep mode)

    Thank you for the suggestion John. I went into Task Scheduler and reviewed all the tasks under the Task Scheduler Library to see if any had the condition set to wake the computer to run that task. I found one: It is called TMM in the list and the description is: Microsoft Transient Multi-Monitor Manager. And it is currently running on my computer. Any ideas or knowledge about this task and if ok to disable the wake condition to run the task?

    Thanks much.

    Jeff
