Problem with Vista shutdown/startup

Greetings,

I've been searching all over trying to fix this issue, a friend recommended me these forums. Here is my problem:

When I boot up my PC it goes all the way to the loading screen (the progress bar) and then monitor goes blank and system reboots. I choose to start in safe mode (from the selection), it starts all good. Then I restart the PC and it boots well without any problems. However, next time I shut down, I have to go through the whole process again.

Sometimes I see "dumping physical memory" with a blue screen, sometimes I don't.

I THINK it has something to do with my video drivers, but I updated to the latest catalyst drivers and still same thing.

Here's my system:

Windows Vista x64 OEM Home Premium
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard
Intel Core Duo E8400
Saphire Radeon HD 4580
8 megs of ram

Thing is, once I get it to boot Vista, it runs smooth and all programs & games work nicely without any problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried a start up repair using your vista disk?

No I have not, I'll try that. Should I do that after I reboot in safe mode or right after my normal booting doesn't work?

Boot up on the vista install disk. It should see your install and give you an option to repair it. Then select startup repair.

I wonder if this is the same 'curse' that I'm experiencing. I have many of the same hardware components, too. For instance, same motherboard and graphic card. I haven't tried a Vista Repair, either.

Does doing this repair kill installed drivers, etc?

No, just looks at the Master boot record and things in the early stages of booting.

Thanks Ted. I looked for that tutorial to link. I got busy with something else before I found it.

Actually I THINK I fixed it. I was sure my bios was uptodate, but I guess it wasn't. I went on gigabyte site and downloaded @bios utility. Then updated my BIOS. It seemed to fix the issue. At least yesterday evening I was able to shutdown/boot up without any issues.

So, Oskari, try that to see if it helps.

Thanks Zver, I think I will. Here's hoping the download isn't too large, cos I'm still one of the 1% stuck with dial-up. BTW, your system specs mention '8 megs of ram'? lol

BTW Oskari, BIOS updates typically fit on a floppy disk.....even the CD ISO versions are usually no more than 5-16 MB in size.

Hello all!

I'm having pretty much the exact same problem as discussed in this thread, and I figured I'd throw in my troubles. My specs are quite different from the OP's, as far as I am aware (I'm not all that learned in computers... yet:)), but the boot up problem is exactly the same, including the Safe mode work-around. I'm trying to follow the incredibly helpful step-by-step tutorials on start up repair from my Vista disk, but the first step is proving a problem. I put the disk in and restarted, but... I never get a prompt as the tutorial says I will.

Thanks all; your forums have been very helful so far, and I've only just now signed up.

I was following the one posted earlier in this thread. That looks good as well, though, and I'm starting the repair now. Thankyou very much!

Yikes, I hit a bit of a problem! The repair says it will restart several times, and it does, but my problem is WITH restarts. As the original post has said, there's a problem when the computer restarts, and it shuts down before it gets to the desktop. How can I repair if, in order to repair, I must use the very thing I'm trying to fix; in this case, the restart!? :zip:

I'm wondering if I should instead try a Bios update as Zven did. I've no idea how to go about that, though.

Hello again.

From what you said earlier about no prompt using this --> http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html?ltr=S

Have a second look at this ... under "Heres How"

2. If prompted, press any key to start Vista from the installation DVD. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You will only have about 8 seconds to press this key.

I take this to mean you may not get a prompt.

I was following this link you posted earlier:

Sorry if I was not clear. I'm still confused by the small differences in the term Startup Repair and Repair Install. The problem is that, during the installation, the computer has to restart several times. The problem I'm trying to fix with the Repair Install, however, is my broken restarts, and it's creating a bit of a difficulty with the repair installation.

The best thing to do would be is to start a NEW thread (post) under the "General Discussion" forum.

It will get many more views, as people are not viewing this one because it's getting old!
