Thanks in advance for any helpful replies... I am using an HP a1700n with Vista Home Premium. I cannot for the life of me figure out why my SD card reader will not read any cards. All of my drivers are up-to-date (I believe... I'm not sure exactly which device I am looking for in device manager). I downloaded and installed what I was told might be a fix (Texas Instruments PCIxx 20), to no avail. I would hate to have to buy an external card reader when I have a 9-in-1 built-in... and assuming I did, if this is a Vista problem, no guarantee even that would work. Any suggestions?

Quick update... I have a dual-boot with Ubuntu 8.04, which reads all sd cards perfectly.

I have 3 AIO card readers and all work just fine in Vista. In Windows Explorer are you seeing multiple drives under the section "drives with removable storage" ? More than likely 4 of them....
Also, when you say it will not read any cards, can you detail that? Is the card just not popping up in Autoplay, of have you tried actually navigating to those drives to see the contents and can find nothing?

Thanks for the reply... normally, Explorer does not show any status change in any of the four removable drives when an SD card is inserted. Autplay doesn't come up, either. However, my HP just made a liar out of me and read a Kodak card, after I rolled back the driver (I believe to factory preset installed before I updated to the TI driver). Still, though, some cards aren't being read.

And one more thing - have you verified the cards in other machines? And are any of the cards SDHC or Secure Digital types? that 9 in 1 card reader may simply not handle the format.....

None of the cards are HD, or high capacity for that matter... all are 1G or less. I'm aware of the problems Vista had with 2G+ cards. Like I said, though, the card reader is fine (Ubuntu on the same machine recognizes all of my cards flawlessly). The cards that are not being read are not showing up in Explorer (readable cards show up under the I drive) And, yes, they have been verified on another Vista machine. I'm still puzzled. Maybe roll back the driver?

I just thought of something else - boot into Ubuntu and make sure all the cards are formatted FAT16 or FAT32 and not something like ext2 / ext3.

Thanks for all the help... fixed the problem by uninstalling all root hub drivers and reinstalling. After reboot, the card reader works perfectly. For anyone looking for a how-to, here's a guide:
