WMP performance issue

Hi, if this thread is in the wrong spot, forgive me and feel free to move it. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a windows media performance issue that I have been unable to find an answer for. Just last night, WMP stopped playing the video part of video files on my computer. The audio still works fine, and the progress bar continues as normal while the clip is playing, but the screen is black. I don't think this is a codec issue because I've had these clips for awhile, and it only just last night started not to play them correctly. I tried to install codec packs on the off chance, but that didn't help. I also tried to uninstall wmp, but I can't figure out how to do that either, it's not in the +/- programs section. I'm running vista 32bit. Thanks for your time.:)

yes this sound like the typical a WMP bug.... un-installing all the codecs for WMP the re installing them again will sometimes (9/10 times) fix the problem

Hey ripbox, may I humbly ask a stupid question? How does one go about uninstalling all the codecs for wmp 11 on vista? Their's no button and it's not in add/remove either. Then once that's done, where is the proper place to get the right codecs again? There is a lot of stuff out there. Again, thanks for your time.

Thanks zeratuelx but i'm having trouble finding those options (since it was written for windows 2000) in vista's classic view of the control panel. :-(

It's vista 32bit, and I believe it's wmp 11. Possibly 10. I got the videos to work in quicktime, but still am having problems with wmp

Same problem here, Ultimate 32 bit, clean install, don't know when it started.

No video displays when playing any file format, including M$'s sample WMV file in the video folder. Sound is OK.

No error messages

Installing codec packs doesn't help.

Replacing the Windows Media Player folder in Program Files from a working Vista WMP doesn't help either.

Turning off directX acceleration for WMV codec in Options doesn't help

Downloading Wmp 11 to overwrite or repair doesn't work because a newer version is installed.

WMV sample files plays in Media Center

Media Player Classic and VLP play OK after installing

I really sorry but i have blasted my way threw vista and google but can not find how to remove the codecs:( if it had been Xp then there would have been no problem at all but vista is proving to be a swine:( but i will keep looking

as for downloading WMP11 to re install, that could work provided it re writes the codecs:geek:

zeratuelx, I went you the link, and my "download codecs" box is was already checked. I then tried to do the advance, and I found that under "properties" of the video I've been trying to play there is in fact codecs there, they just don't seem to be working. It said the codec was ffsd or something (forget the name of it, it was part of a codec pack I installed to try and fix the problem) So I uninstalled that to try and roll it back. Upon playing the video again, it said my codec was Nero 7, yet was still black. I uninstalled Nero, and now it says the codec is "MainConcept (Muvee) MPEG Video Decoder" *sigh*

My installed version of WMP is newer than the down loadable version- says it can't repair it because of this.

Maybe the installed version on some is updated with Windows updates and these could be uninstalled thus reverting back to an older version and allowing a repair.

Can't do this with mine as the installed OS has the "updated?" WMP 11, at least I don't see any media player updates on this Ultimate. My Premium has WMP updates but it works OK.

This might be a possibility for some with this problem.
Check the version, uninstall WMP updates and see if the version number reverts back wards. Maybe then it could be repaired?

You can try the vista codec pack. That solved the problem on a clients computer.

Ugh, tried your three steps, but the 2nd one wouldn't install because it said the program had been blocked from installing b/c it'd give my computer start up problems (tried to bypass it and vista crashed) and then I installed DivX, and it still won't play MPEGs and the like. :-(

My Computer

Hmmm, can you give us a screenshot of the error? Also have you tried any other videos? It's possible the one video may be corrupt.

Ok, here are some screenshots of the problem, with various different videos and formats. If you want a picture of anything specific, just ask. Thanks again.
