Vista Microsoft's Failure!

:cry:Vista has failed to deliver on Microsoft’s promise of a better operating system. After spending many days formatting and reformatting my hard drive to come up with the best possible dual boot system; I found Windows Xp to be not only more flexible but faster on the same hardware.
The lack of advanced installation options is a crippling problem for any user. The need to turn on and off features during installation is paramount to a good installation for advanced users. When it come to upgrading from the OEM software package installed on your computer to another version of Vista be prepared to reinstall all of your software!
Vista’s start menu is one of the problems. You would think that the people that designed the window installer subsystem would have thought about giving you the option of where and under what heading to put programs shortcuts by now.
No ZIP file handler as part of Windows explorer is just plain stupid. The loss of the Windows explorer toolbar is a disaster for those people who do not have any right click shell enhancement such as FileMenu Tools.
By now you would think the designers that work for Microsoft would have given you different user modes to switch to. Each mode would start or stop service depending on the user’s needs or security clearance level. The idea they had was good; but poorly implemented. User account controls is a shot at it but not the answer for your average user.
All of the graphics in the world do not make a good operating system! I run WindowBlinds, Yz Shadow, Visual Task Tips, TopDesk, WinRoll, Iconoid, and UberIcon to give Xp a better graphics package than Vista!
There have been many customizations of Xp on my system to give it a better look and feel. I have done the same with Vista. But after 7 days of only Vista and all of it’s failures I returned to using Xp as my primary operating system.

Note: I have reinstalled Vista in various configurations fifteen times in the past six months

Your complaints are consistent with that of a simple nOOb. I have installed Vista hundres of times on just as many different configurations and have had none of the difficulties you are having.

The GUI is perfect and much better then XP. And thats without having to use any 3rd party programs, which really just muck your system up.

Zipo files? WinRAR. Problem solved. Its the same I used for XP.

Since Vista is such a core for you(15 installs and you still cant figure it out) I suggest you uninstall Vista and return to XP until your computer sills advance past the pre k level.

If you really want to use Vista the "right" way, have an expirenced user install it for you so that the problems you have will no longer be an issue.

Troll.

I use Vista As a backup! After over 25 year of working with various operating systems Vista is the Worst!!!!!!!!!!!! I have 180 + applications installed on both partitions. I do know and full well just how badly they designed it. Windows Millennium comes to mind when I think about Vista. If some of you do not believe me install office 2007 and then corrupt an outlook profile and have to reinstall the whole operating system to fix the problem!

I do run Office 2007 on all ten of my systems. From small bus. edition to Proversion to Office 2007 ultimate on my personal system. The kids use the pro version and my wife the small bus. edition.

After over a year of useing them we have never had a corupt anything.

Prehaps my 6yo daughter can give you some pointers on how to use your equipment. I would point you to my 8yo or my 17yo sons but they are advanced users and would probably get frustrated trying to teach you.

Try a for dummies book.

you do not use outlook or you have not bothered to look on the net about office 2007 problems with send and receive issues!

When and "if" any issues arrise, I would.

After all this time I dont see it happening. I have Outlook open right now with Word at he same time.

No issues.

Whizxp,

I have used all kinds of operating systems: Commodore, Apple (DOS 3.3, ProDOS, SOS, Lisa, Mac OS, MAC OS X), Microsoft (all of them), CP/M, Unix, etc. I have been doing tech support since 1980.

Vista certainly is not the most troublesome. In fact, Vista works just fine. I now like it much better than Windows XP.

No ZIP file handler as part of Windows explorer is just plain stupid.

That's all I needed to know...

No zip file handler? My vista installation opens zipfiles per default, and unlike XP it hasn't stopped working a single time... Get original installation media atleast before you come here whining... After I got myself a LEGIT licence of vista, most of the trouble I had while running a hacked version disappeared... I wonder why that is....

Try running OSX on a few years old Mac and see where that gets you... You can't be too experienced if you get this agitated over the simple fact that a new OS require better hardware... The only thing I can say is: "No Sh*t Sherlock"....

While the rhetoric in this post is pretty much vitriolic, and the response have been just as acerbic, let me chime in.

I don't give a rat's arse just how long you've been using computers, but the fact of the matter remains that Vista is more secure then XP, *with a default* installation of both. As for XP running faster than Vista on modern hardware, really? You expect faster machines to run XP slower? I'll bet you never ran XP on a Pentium 200 MHz machine with 96 MB - compare that to Vista on a P4 2.0 GHz machine with 1 GB of RAM - and tell me XP is faster.

You have to learn to compare apples to apples.

FWIW, many of the Pros here have been running computers for a long time - I myself started in home computing on a TI 99-4/A myself. I have seen things change and I know how to keep up with Microsoft and their releases. Go back and check the average machine being sold by OEMs 1.5 years after XP was released (that would make it about April 2003) and compare the power of the machines with XP running to the average machine being sold today with Vista running - if you still think XP is faster then you are simply here to complain.

These are help forums - if you don't want help, don't bother posting.

you do not use outlook or you have not bothered to look on the net about office 2007 problems with send and receive issues!

And how many of those complainers are using default installations, without messing around using Registry cleaners, service tweaking, optimization techniques and the like? I'll bet that number of *true* problems with Office products starts to dwindle as soon as those are taken into account. Furthermore, my sister runs *XP Media Center 2005* on her Dell Laptop (not even 2 years old yet) and *it* has send / receive problems. Even more interesting, this problem has started getting *smaller* with Office 2007 and Vista - but is still showing up regularly on the OS that you say "runs better and faster on the same hardware than Vista."

It helps to do your research.

Anymore flaming or complaining and this thread gets locked.

I have a question for you John.

I never use regisry cleaners or tweaking programs. I do tweak the system a little but generaly leave most of the default settings alone.

My question being...Why do all 10 of my systems run perfectly, and why do my wife and children have no problems with Vista as well?

We all run Vista ultimate. But my system is the lone x64 in the bunch workstation wise. I'm not counting the server, which runs 2008 standard edition x64.

My lack of problems with Vista combind with minimal effort, and the fact that small children (ages 6, 8 and 17) use Vista everyday with no problems. Not even an ocasional BSOD.

Am I just blessed?

No - you have more technical skills and if something minor were to occur, you'd be on top of it in a flash. That combined with the fact that your kids probably run limited accounts, either using Parental controls or else you monitor them like a good parent should, meaning they don't get a chance to screw things up.

Finally, most people who have problems don't realize that Vista is not XP - and they cannot treat Vista like they did XP. There is no need for 15 different AV / AM products running on your system, there is no need to clean the registry, there is no need to do all the things you had to in XP to keep it squeaky clean.

I only have issues with Vista when I force it to have issue, or when I have failing hardware. After about 40+ installs, I'd say I am doing great as well.
