Vista Freezing

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced these annoying freezes that occur randomly in Vista 64. It can happen while I'm playing a game, it can happen while I'm browsing firefox etc. I freeze up about 4 times a day and the only solution is a hard restart.

Computer specs are

E8400
P5Q Pro
WD 150GB 10k HD
Seagate 250g 7200 HD
Powercolor ATI 4850
Toshiba 22x SATA DVD RW
Ralink wireless PCI adapter

vCore is 1.224
VID is 1.225

Nothing is OC'ed yet until this problem goes away

It is beyond me, I have the video card drivers up to snuff, all updates are installed, virus scanners/spyware scanners, video card isn't overheating, CPU idles at 33 loads at 42

I'll describe the problem a little better other than to just say it's freezing.

When the freeze occurs, the entire screen stops moving, I cannot move my mouse, all sound stops working, and if there was a sound playing, it will get mutilated into a nasty buzz.

Have run memtest as well
Running Prime 95 right now for 2 hours with no errors

I had the same problem which is improved but not solved. I believe there is a lot to do with some games and more likely their patches. The installations causes hard drive errors which some time even prevent booting up. As evidence, my computer is running normally without freezing after I uninstall Oblivion and Company of Hero but still didn't guarantee a smooth boot. The most recent evidence is the CoD4 patch 1.6 which causes so much problem I had to do a system recovery and reinstall CoD4. May be Vista is not ready for all the games or just virus or a bad HD cable.

You might try reinstalling your video driver or possibly another card. I have experianced symptoms like that when the video processor is being reset.

rtt_77388, I have just updated my video driver yesterday and everything seems ok. It is not quite feasible financially to try other the option as mentioned. Thanks.

No, I may disable SLi first and go from there.

Please keep in mind, I don't have freeze problem during gaming any more, but, for example, it freezes in screen saver, during shutdown when logging off, starting browser and so on. Do you think my Diskeeper on the background may be the culprit?

The most bothersome is freezing up during booting. I hope I don't have to reinstall my OS eventually.

Also with what zero said, how old is your OS, if it is new or you have just installed software/hardawre there will be a small amount of slowdown, this is due to the OS indexing the new files. When i first had my OS I had a few slowdowns but they stopped by there own. How old is your system?

Thanks Roy69. It has been about 8 months old. It was working find until since sp1 came out then things became sluggish. Of course I have added a bunch of stuffs since. Thanks again.
