Hi All, I have windows vista Ultimate. I have a problem showing my computer view??,it keeps changing all the time?,for example,the hard drives are not shown in order, the removable disks are everywhere,etc?,I have changed the view to details,but the words... devices with removable storage,etc do not show up only the icons?,where has the words gone?,that describe what is listed??.. hmmm,it happened once before,but I forget how I did it. Can anyone please help me restore it back to default. Thanks.

Hi Riptorn, and welcome to Vista Forums.

See if changing the View for Computer to Tiles, then click on the Type column name helps. You may need to click on Type again until the arrow points up.

Another option is to do the NOTE under step 1 in this tutorial.

Thank You, But I did all what you said, but the problems are still there???... is very annoying, all I want is in my computer to show the writing that says hard drives, devices with removable storage,and networks,the written words,grouped,then showing the icons, not sure if you understand what I mean??.. all I get is these numbers and letters if I group them. Not the actual writing,that describes the icons???... I think I may have messed it all up by applying to all folders now??.. I wish you could help me?.or if I had a picture of what I mean to show you. Please try to help me. Thanks.

Brink, Thank You, Yes I did restart the computer, what I have is .. in the name area, it has letters and numbers,grouped,what I need is instead of that,I want it to show the devices with removable storage,disks,etc,not letters and numbers.

Ok,

In Computer click on the drop down arrow to the right of Views and click on Tiles, then click on the Type column name until the arrow points up. Afterwards, do the tutorial link to hide the drive letters if wanted.

I'm Having a similar problem that I've run into to before that only a restore seemed to fix. I can get the computer view to list the drives by type just fine the only problem is the computer view is sorting by drive name and not by drive letter. So in the "devices with removable storage" my "dvd/rw drive (D)" is coming before my "Floppy disk drive (A)" I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am using Widows Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 by the way.

Hi Tom, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Try clicking on the Type column name so that the little triangle is pointed up. That should change the sort order to what you are wanting.

I've tried that, the sorting is fine with harddisks on top and removable storage drives beneath. Also when sorting by name it works with A first, C second, etc. The problem arises when sorting by type suddenly windows now sorts by drive name instead of drive letter putting the D: drive before the A: drive under the removable drive group. Thanks for the help hopefully we can figure out how to fix this.

That would be normal if you chose a sorting order under the Name column instead of the Type column. You can tell what column is being used to sort by with the one that has the small triangle above the column name.

It is being sorted by type. The best way to explain it is the first picture you posted on page one is exactly how it looks with the exception that Local disk (c) and Backup (D) would be reversed because that is the way it is sorting for type on my computer, alphabetically by drive name not drive letter, this only occurs when being sorted by type, any other sort method sorts by drive letters once sorted into the proper sort fields i.e. by capacity, space remaining, etc.

Manualy deleting the registry entries in the shell folder eventually fixed it. I would really like to know what's causing this to happen because this is the second time it has but it probally will remain a mistry of windows. Thanks alot for your help.

Your welcome Tom. The exact cause of that little bug as not been tracked down completely. Method Two in that tutorial above has been the only thing that seems to help. Some people never have the problem again after using it, while others get the problem back after some random time. I hope it holds for you.
