pyronox,

The first thing to do is try the external drive in another, known good, drive enclosure. It's possible the power supply of the drive enclosure has failed or other hardware of the enclosure has failed.

Regardless, and I know this doesn't help, you should ALWAYS have backups of critical data. Large capacity hard drives are quite inexpensive so develop a backup solution regardless of the end result in this case.

Hi pyronox,

I agree with sidewinder. I had this happen to me with my external drive - Vista would only recognise it intermittedly - and I replaced the enclosure with the same drive and have been using it ever since. Assuming that you can get inside your enclosure, check the connections between the interface board and the drive itself to make sure that they haven't become loose. If they seem OK and your drive is still not being recognised, then it is time to replace the enclosure. Another thing that you can do is to connect the drive to an internal connector on your PC - there are adapters available to convert the drive interface to the required type in your PC. If you use this method, and your drive is recognised by your BIOS, then it is up to you whether you leave it as an internal drive or go ahead and get another enclosure for it.
