    Sleep or Coma

Vista 64 goes to sleep or coma while on the web using various bit torrent clients. Always requires a hard reboot. Happens even at night when unattended. Goes in spurts, OK for a couple of weeks and then quite often. Flashget is the worst, tried just about all the bit torrent clients available. Something has to present a conflict or it has something to do withh ATT Dsl (maybe). Had a lot of tcpip.sys errors in event viewer. There are ways to patch this but it is not something I want to do. I would just like to prevent these errors, if they really precipitated the coma.

Here is my machine, in a Danger Den air case.

Maybe somebody has some ideas. Already did a fresh install some time ago. Do regular system maintenance such as defragging, registry cleaning, disk scanning and so on. Had Vista 32 bit on the machine some time ago but I can't remember if the condition persisted then. Might have to go back to that just to check.
    Thanks
    Udo

Have you tired Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Put the computer to sleep <set to never>? There may be a bios setting for Wake on LAN or something simular you might look for....

Power is set to "never" go to sleep. Can't ever wake it when that happens. Will check bios next.
    Thanks

I wouldn't think Wake on LAN would help if it is set to never sleep. Do you have a third party screen saver for something that might be conflicting with it?

    Re: Sleep or Coma

No third party screen saver. Found an item in the bios which was set to 32 bits. I set it to 64. The item is in power management and is the HPET mode. In English it is the High Precision Event Timer. Anybody know what that does?
I am connected wirelessly to our home network. The hard wired computer is off at night, only my machine is running. Just input latest firmware into router just in case. I also rolled system back to seven days ago, Norton Ghost 12.
Will see how it goes, but any and all ideas are appreciated. Maybe I should get off the torrent mania.

    Found info on HPET at:

Guidelines For Providing Multimedia Timer Support

Still do not comprehend if set to 32 bit on a 64 bit machine it could could cause the coma. Who knows?

    Re: Sleep or Coma

Thanks to all who gave me some ideas. After checking the event viewer for trouble reports before system went into coma I saw those side by side reports where some module of Nero had a conflict with something else in the AMD64 manifest. For example, Photosnap and Nero tool Disk check. I have other image apps on the system and various other burners. I removed Nero and had Flashget running overnight and occasionally me browsing the net. Worked fine.
Gee I said, I reinstalled all of Nero8(registered) opened up Mozilla and whammo: lockup. Uninstalled Nero with only the burners and everything is ok so far.
I do have frequent tcip overruns but otherwise I am happy. During my "analytical" process I installed Comodo firewall which allows me to see all port usage. Excellent. No affiliation. Using the free 64 app. Also found most other torrent apps have to much difficulty with port usage. Flashget uses ports randomly but it has to be throttled down.
Kudos to Microsofts event viewer. The 64 bit Vista is also very security conscious. I don't dare use the hidden admistrator as described elsewhere in this forum.
    Thanks again
    Udo
