hi,

I have a lenovo y510 laptop of which I can not access the locked bios settings. I flashed the bios to update using lenovo provided flash. Is there a way to access this section of the bios to adjust certain factors? Such as cpu, bus, etc. Id like to make only small adjustments nothing extreme.

OEM's don't let you play with their bioses. They lock them for good reason. Your parts are different from the same parts bought retail. OEM's (original equipment manufacturer) make their own parts and write their own bioses, so if, for example, you bought an OEM laptop with an "Asus" motherboard, it would not use the same bios that's available at asus.com for those who bought that same model Asus motherboard at newegg.

Secondly, it's not at all a good idea to overclock a laptop. They have enough problems with heat as it is. You'd only end up wrecking your gear.

Very very true.. I woulnd't overclock that thing. does that model have the 8600GS in it. they alone are having heat issues also, I woulnd't add to it.

Question. how did you buy that laptop. did you get it using retailedge.?? if you don't know what that is. then nevermind

I purchased this laptop from a friend still in box. It seems given the specs..which are not to great, it seems a little more horsepower would speed it up. I did specific tweaks to adjust boot up time. I know these pieces of hardware are set to marginal speeds at best, from the factory.

it's the 1.66 GHz right.. also remember thats a Dual Core. so it will work better than a single thats 3.0 GHz.

maybe add more or better ram, but 2GB is the sweet spot for Vista. you don't actually "Need More" unless you do lots of work on the machine, what are you using this Lappy for.

I'm seing more than one list of specs for that. one thats a 1.66 with 2GB and integrated intel graphics. and one thats 1.83 GHz with 4GB and an 8600GTS. what model does yours have??

As Fumz said, I'd also advise not to overclock that thing. Just for the heat issue. if you have the integrated Graphics, then heat is less of a worry, but still a worry. in the end it's up to you. although HP or OEM's like that brand Lock just about everything in the BIOS, and you probably can't adjust the CPU speeds.

+1 to what Fumz said.. might as well stay on 32bit though.

so what Graphics card, or integrated graphics does it have?
