Black Screen and Cursor after windows logo

Hi,

I've been running Vista for a few months now without much complaint until recently. After booting, the green loading bar is followed by the windows logo before the screen flickers several dark colors and then produces a black screen with a movable cursor. The hard drive light remains unlit after the black screen. Running in safe mode gives the same result. I do not have a repair disk and I would rather not wipe the hard drive with a factory default disk as I have important data on my hard disk.

I am running Toshiba Satellite with an Intel Core™2 Duo Processor T5550, 2 GB RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3470 - 256 MB

I've been trying to restore my pc for a few days now with no luck. HELP!

Thanks :p

I`m no Vista PRO, but the first thing i would do is:

Run Vista Startup Repair, that can be found in the tutorials.
(It is quite easy, just boot from the CD, and Repair it.)

If this doesn`t work, try to boot in safe mode and then Backup your things.
(To run in Safe Mode, i use the method, turn on wait until the vista logo comes, then turn off by the button, so next time you boot, you can choose to Safe Mode)

Backup the computer by a External Drive. ( Don`t use DVDs, its a waste)

My Windows Vista was pre-Installed and therefore I do not posses a proper vista disk. The best I have is a recovery disk that reverts your PC back to factory defaults, completely wiping your hard disk. I would rather keep the data on my hard disk, but if all else fails, I will use this. Safe mode will not work either, so I cannot backup.

Thanks anyway.

There are some details that I have left out of my first post. The night before the error, I discovered my laptop in sleep mode. After I accidentally turned it off with the intention of starting my laptop up, chkdsk was automatically run on reboot. I have come across others with symptoms similar to this error, found after running chkdsk. I do not know whether this has any relevance.

The problem was a system logging failure. Windows was corrupted- I don't know whether by spy ware or by itself. I'm having to resort to reformatting as I cannot repair windows without the proper disk :cry::cry:.

Thanks anyway for all your help!

WAIT!........

You can sort this....It's a bit long winded but it can be done!!!!

You will need to borrow access to someone else's computer but your data can be saved.

1. Get a cheap 2.5 usb enclosure....£20
2. Take out your hard drive and place it in the enclosure
3. Hook it up to another pc and copy all your files to their disk or a memory stick / sd...etc.
4 your data is saved
5. put the hard drive back into the laptop and use the recovery disk to revert it back to factory settings.
6. Burn your saved data on a dvd or cd or keep it on the memory stick / cd
7. Transfer the data over to the laptop.

You probably will have to fiddle with paths to restore emails etc....

Job done

Hope we're not too late.......

I wondered about this, but I realized that I would probably loose my warranty if I fiddled with the hardware. I would rather have my hard drive wiped than risk having nothing and nowhere out.

Thanks - If my this happens again and my warranty expires, I will do this.
