Ok - First let me apologize for posting in general...I dunno where else to post this.

OK heres the deal, Basically I messed up big time. I was increasing my virtual memory in my PC and when i was there set my C: to active. When i rebooted my PC i got a BOOTMGR is missing.

So i went into repair via Vista installation disks and through the command prompt typed 'Bootsec /fixboot' then rebooted.

Then it said booting but didn't move.

Then i decided to give up and do a reinstall, at expanding files i got the error Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart the installation. Error Code 0x80070001

The disks work on other PC. So i decided to do a drive format, It completed successfully...So it said anyway. Install failed again.

Any suggestions?

Please note, I think this is important - I Had 256-Bit AES encryption on my drive via truecrypt.

Please help - Thanks

Re: Mahor Issue Help Request!

Have you tried manually deleting the partitions? Like when you choose to install Vista and you choose which partition to install to, I think there's the option to delete them.

Omg get this -

Burning the FOLDERS ONLY to the disk and inserting that before clicking next to start the installation fixed this.

How annoying :(

Hi FMCJ,

The BOOTMGR error is usually caused when it boots the wrong hard-drive ;)

To avoid making mistakes like this again, it would help if you understand what "active partition" means.

It works like this:
Suppose you have 3 primary partitions on your hard disk, C D E ("primary" just means it's the ordinary type of partition).
Only one of the primary partition at a time can be set Active. So if C was set active and you make D active, that switches off C being active.

When you boot the computer, the BIOS boots the hard disk. The MBR code at the start of the hard disk always boots whatever is marked as being the Active partition.

When you made the wrong partition active, the boot code at the start of the disk tried to boot the wrong partition, so it complained that Vista's startup file "bootmgr" was missing.

There was no need to reinstall Vista.
You could have simply changed it back to having the Active status switched on for the correct partition using any partition manager program. Because the hard disk won't boot, you could do it with the free Gparted which you run from a bootable CD. In Gparted, it's called "setting the partition's Boot Flag on" which means the same as setting it active.
