Closed CD drive lags computer

I've got a strange situation. Anytime my cd drive is closed my computer lags to the point of no return.
It won't load vista until I open the cd drive and while vista is running my computer will just about stop responding. All that moves is the mouse and I can click on things but they won't open until I reopen the cd drive.

Is something broken or any other ideas?

Hi,

A daft question, perhaps, but have you still got a CD/DVD in the drive? If so, remove it. This could cause the problems you describe if the disc is corrupted and your system is trying to read it. Another possibility is a loose connection. Check that the interface cable is correctly orientated and securely fitted at both ends. Also check the power lead to the drive. If none of this works, then the drive could be failing, in which case a replacement will be necessary. These are relatively cheap, and the newer drives also support a wider range of disc formats.

Hi BigEasy,

It sounds like it may be trying to read from the CD drive and getting hung up if you have a bad cd in it. Remove the CD if so. If not, then as a test, see if turning off AutoPlay and disabling the Shell Hardware Detection Service will stop this from happening.

Check your CD drive's cable connections as well for anything that may have been loose. If it still happens afterwards, then it may be time to get a new CD/DVD drive.

Well I'm just going to have to order that blu ray dvd drive I've been wanting it seems. Before posting I have checked all connections and even disconnected non essential devices to see if it was a power issue. I had tried different CD's in the tray and still had the problem and when no cd is in the tray things seem okay.

I should have noticed this from the beginning but I don't seem to hear the cd ever spin up once the drive is closed.

Thank you for the time and help.

Have you checked BIOS to see that you don't have it listed in the boot order somewhere?

BigEasy,

Well, at least you have a good excuse now to upgrade to Blu Ray. ;)

Yes I've looked and my cd drive is #3 on the list of boot priority.
Seems that they have Blu Ray/HD DVD all in one drives and it should be here by the weekend :D

It is a good excuse for a new drive...I would try taking it off the boot list. Maybe you'll end up with two drives.
