Add and Delete Users

I have new Vista laptop. I changed the primary Administrator name from ABC to DEF. I also added another Administrator, XYZ. ABC still shows up in c:\users. DEF and XYZ do not (they're in the Control Panel>User Accounts). Before I download any more programs, how do I get ABC files into DEF? how do I get DEF and XYZ into c:\users? Thank you for your help.

Re: Add and Delete Users

Hello Wemimo, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The only way you can change the C:\Users\(user name) folder name is to create a new account and delete the old one. The Note at the top of this tutorial will help show you how to if needed.

User Account Name

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Add and Delete Users

Hello Jasmine, and welcome to Vista Forums.

That would allow you to just change the name of the user account, but it will not change the name of the C:\Users\(User Name) folder. You would have to do the method I described in my post above to do so. If you just changed the folder name manually, then you would corrupt the user account and cause all sorts of issues.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Add and Delete Users

Brink,
Thank you so much for responding. One question: do I need to change primary Administrator name, via CP>UAC, back to ABC before I delete it? Remember, in my original explanation, I changed it from ABC to DEF. Or does it matter?

Re: Add and Delete Users

Wemimo,

Since you will be deleting that account after creating a new one, it does not matter. However, you will not be able to use the ABC or DEF name for the new account since they are both tied to the original account.

Re: Add and Delete Users

Hey Shawn,
Help! I changed the password for the primary Administrator. The password that I wrote down is not working. What can I do without losing files? What a mess.

Re: Add and Delete Users

Hi Wemimo,

You should be able to use System Restore (Method Four - Scenario 1) in this tutorial to go back to the old password.

Reset User Account Password

Hope this helps,
