Vista not always booting up - post screen

Hi,

I have the gigabyte eP45-DQ6 motherboard. When booting up, or rebooting, even before I get to the windows loading screen, I get a black screen. Almost like the monitor doesnt turn on but the computer sounds likes on.

I reinstalled due to some other issues, but the same issue with loading happens. ITs sporadic. Sometimes it does it, others not.

I updated to v11 of BIOS, and it still does it.

Otherwise its very stable. Is there a setting in the motherboard? Is it vista related?

Any help !

It does boot in safe mode. If I reset the pc, it reboots second time around. It does not always have the issue. Sometimes when I restart it hangs just before the vista loading graphic appears. I am running catalyst 8.8 driver. If I hot my keyboard, I notice the num/caps locks also dont activate so maybe the pc is still sleeping even though the fan is spinning?

When windows loads, no errors are reporting. However, when the boot doesnt make it up and I hard reboot, I get the option to run in safe mode.

This now happens probably 3 out of 4 boots. I need advice as I am going crazy

Hi,

I had this issue on my pc a few days ago actually after updating BIOS. I then updated two or three different versions of the bios, all did the same problem.

I tried repairing, and then eventually pulled the plug and reinstalled, same issue started already from the get-go including my install.

I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 V3.3 board and it is doing the same thing. Windows starts booting and I see a bsod for just a split second before reboot. I choose restart windows normaly and it boots ok. This never happened under the 32 bit version. I also am using raid now with the JM drivers whereas before I was not. Now that everything else is working great, I need to start looking into this annoyance.

Hi

Does seem like a BIOS issue

Oldbloke gave a great description of what is supposed to happen :

When you boot the computer, the BIOS boots the hard disk. The MBR code at the start of the hard disk always boots whatever is marked as being the Active partition.
Seems this is the bit that is erratic.

When I updated my BIOS the ASRock website warned not to update if everything was working fine ( of course, I went ahead and did it anyway, luckily everything is fine ).

Seems like good advice. You might try getting the previous BIOS version from your mobo website and "upgrading to that" - also check if there are new mobo chipset drivers ( probably under the Drivers section, rather than the Bios section ) - you may need those with the new BIOS.

Another thing is that when I flashed my new Bios, it reset everything to the defaults - if yours did the same, maybe this has something to do with it. Tho. as erdavis has the same problem and hasn't flashed the new Bios , more likely you need new chipset drivers - or try reverting to previous version.

what was the problem you had before? has this motherboard ever worked? any recent hardware changes? i had a similar program when i first built my unit, and i had to tweak some bios settings (it had to do with my ram)

Hi jedi88, if all the suggestions didn't help, try to check the SATA cable connection. It is a know problem that the cable comes loose from the HDD easily or just bad cable. To test it simply by remove and then replace the cable or usw an after market cable with a latch. If it wouldn't help switch ports 'cause some ports may be bad begin with. Good luck and let us know how things turn out.
