do we need to upgrade to windows7?

First, does this belong in a vista x64 forum?

Second, MS has not been forthcoming about the features which are to be included in windows 7. Speculating about whether you NEED to upgrade or whether there are any or a lot of differences is a moot point.

Third...when is there ever a NEED to upgrade? I hardly ever see one. I only upgrade if the old OS no longer satisfies my needs or if the new one offers significant upgrades.

Ask that question in about a year's time...... maybe.

Considering it isn't projected for release until 2011/12 or so, you are being very premature.

well...they did claim that it would be finished by late 2009. In fact, beta 1 is supposed to be out by december of this year. (check the ZDnet coverage for this).

Of course, this means that there is no way that windows 7 can be more than a minor release, if they've only worked on it for 2 years and are already up to beta phase. But still, we shall see what they come up with.

Chances are it will be more like vista than XP....by then XP will probably be well and truly buried as system requirement will call for a 64bit os with min 8gb ram ( pure speculation ).

I beta tested XP.... and that was a nightmare... since then, I decided to never touch any beta software by MS ever again. I'm waiting for the RTM before I install any new version of windows to try it out.

I thought they wanted to release end of 09....but knowing MS it'll probably be 2010 or 2011...

I would like to know what new features they intend to incorporate though.

I was a beta tester for XP before it came to market, from beta 1 onwards. I can tell you, I did not enjoy it. I was using windows 2000 alongside it, and during the first beta, I would be relieved if I could go back to it. I had non-working drivers, or partially working drivers (the USB DSL modem was a partially working one...imagine how much fun that was) I had some filesystem problems under the beta, which meant that anything downloaded under the beta was simply corrupted under any other filesystem....and I can go on and on....

As for you needing a new system.... To be honest, I have not noticed that much of a difference between 32 and 64 bit.... Though I have really noticed the difference between my old athlon x2 3800+ and this set up. I'm guessing you will notice the difference too, especially if you decide to go for a quadcore. If I were you though....I'd hang on for 2 or three more months...just till the core i7 is there. Not that you need to get that immediately, but its release will mean cheaper older chips...and AMD will still want to be able to compete.....

From what I've read the true avantage of 64-bit is years away yet as most applications, whilst 64-bit compatible or "written for 64-bit blah-blah-blah" are really not fully 64-bit, but 32-bit sheep in wolf's clothing, if you get my gist.

That said, the obvious advantage that comes to mind is the ability to handle enormous amounts of RAM, but is there really a need for all that?

For gamers I guess so.

...and this is my 100th post....!

Well, I think we'll start seeing the real advantage when the big companies start producing their software in 64 bit. Such as Adobe. Their next photoshop is supposed to be 64 bit, and when working with large files, I think you will really feel the advantage of 64 bit. And well....once such a large company has started, I think many will follow....

alot of companies have started producing 64bit software. As for windows 7 the market will dictate what happens with that always has and always will people won't change for at least a year unless there is some really good reason for them too change, and a spoksman for MS did say it was on track for a late 09 release but then we all no the software market can have problems. and i hope it is full 64 no option for 32bit as that would just be like living in the past for no reason at all.

hi gazz496,

I think you'll find that, last info I read, Windows 7 will be the last MS OS to offer 32bit option. Have to wait for 8 :D
