Solved Taskbar Toolbar Title removal

For toolbars started in the Vista taskbar, how do you remove the Title? The option doesn't seem to exist any longer.

i.e. under older windows you could:

If you add one or two toolbars to your Windows taskbar, regain some space. Right-click on your created taskbar and on the popup menu that appears, uncheck "Show Title." This removes the title description for your taskbar. If you know the programs on the taskbar by their icon and don't need to see the names of the programs, uncheck "Show Text" as well.

Does this no longer exist in Vista and that I can no longer reclaim the space?

Hello gddeluca, welcome to the vista forums,

to hide the toolbar title you need to unlock the taskbar first then the Show Title and Show Text options become available

Hope this helps

Hi,
Sorry, the taskbar IS unlocked, and the option is not present. I've attached a partial screenshot showing the right-click options I'm presented with.

Hi George,

may seem silly ;) but I get the same menu as you - unless the right click is actually done on the divider bar relating to the actual toolbar concerned. the bar isn't very visible of course. it's the triple row of dots you can see in the screenshot you provided next to start orb (Description only included in case my terminology is misleading:zip:.)

Hi barman58,

I'm a little confused (what else is new).

Are you saying you get a different menu right-clicking on the dotted divider bar?

I don't, its the same whether I click on the bar, or on the title text (which I'm trying to remove). As you can see by my screenshot, the title in my case is quite long (Serious Samurize v1.64.3) So I'm losing a lot of room.

I suspect this has just been overlooked by the MS gurus and dropped from the menu, and will probably need a registry hack - assuming anyone can figure out just what it should be.

George

Hi George,

It is a bit tricky with the spacing, but you have to right click on that tiny bit of free space (red square in screenshots) inbetween the dotted lines (boxed in red in screenshots) and the icon to see that context menu. The taskbar needs to be unlocked to see the dotted lines.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi George,

Toillustrate this, I am going to use the 'Desktop' toolbar. Right click on the task bar and click to remove the tick (if present) next to 'Lock the Taskbar'. Next, highlight 'Toolbars' and in the fly-out menu click to place a tick next to 'Desktop'.
Capture.JPG
Move your mouse pointer so that it is over the text and right click.
Capture1.JPG
Click to remove the tick next to 'Show Text'. Again, move your mouse pointer so that it is over the text and right click. Now click to remove the tick next to 'Show Title'. Notice how the text has changed into an icon. Note that this only affects the item(s) as displayed on the taskbar.
Capture2.JPG
Finally, you can lock the taskbar again if you so wish.

OK Guys, thanks for all the replies ... but ...

Dwarf: I've tried just what you suggested and attached is another screenshot of what I get.

In it you can see your own samples along with my results. The Desktop toolbar is visible (with its title) and a right-click gives me the exact results YOU get showing in your 2nd clip. I never get the menu that you see in your 1st clip.

==> Insert 10 minute break here.

OK, I went and brought up my test Vista system under VMWare and it all worked just fine (as it should).

So I went back to my prod system for one last try before submitting this reply.

Sigh! It worked fine. WTF - I just don't get it. I've attached another snapshot showing it quite nicely offering to let me add back the title, which I can now turn on and off just fine.

Grrr... this has been an incredible waste of time for all of you, but many thanks anyway. I'd love to know what was going on though, I didn't imagine all this.

Thanks again to you all for your involvement.

George

LOL, that's ok George.

It was probably the space you right clicked on. There's a very small margin of error for available space to right click on for it to work. If your off just the slightest bit, it will not work.

I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted.

Shawn

George,

I have just tried that, and I found it easier to click between the rightmost icon and the dotted lines. There seems to be more of a gap at that side.

Hi Guys,

Just to add another observation to the mix I find that if the title is showing then right clicking this will bring up the correct menu. If the title is hidden then the correct menu will appear when the cursor is over the divider and changes to the double headed arrow, (ie Moving the toolbar ), and then right click.

Isn't the vista UI wonderful :D:D

Well guys, I know its 'fixed' (well sorta) but I don't think it was a matter of finding the right place to click. Now that its 'working', I don't have any problem finding the right spot. I can click on the title itself, or I can click anywhere on the dotted divider bar itself and the correct menu pops up.

Before, neither of those would give the correct menu, so SOMETHING else changed, it sure wasn't just a pixel or two difference in where I clicked.

Regardless, its over now. I just hope it doesn't return. But then, this isn't something one plays with a lot.

George
