98% Plugged in, not charging.

Battery is 100% charged, After 2 days in ac power it shows 98%, plugged not charging. Then if I use the battery for a while less than 95% and if i plugged it in ac power, it starts charging and become 100%, fully charged. After two days it show 98%, plugged not charging.
So it is charging, but not holding the charge for some days. Battery replaced with a new one. Laptop is still under waranty.
I am getting 2 hour 20 minutes battery backup.
Would like to know is it a hardware or vista problem?
Thanx in adv.

That happens for me too very often =).
That isn`t a issue, if it isn`t charging is because it already charged and now he is holding. For me it stays always at 99% charged, not charging.

Re: 98% Plugged in, not charging.

Looks like nothing to be too concerned with depends on the technology used in the battery. The battery indicator is after all an estimate made by the software (Vista) In other battery applications (e.g.. Cell Phones ) you will quite often see instructions such as "charge the battery until it shows full or 100% then continue charging for .... hours ), so that would suggest that the battery could be charged to over 100%.

Also the laptop is taking a small charge even when shut down to run the real-time clock etc.

If you really wish to check the retention capabilities of the battery you need to check output voltage , store the battery in controlled conditions for a period of time then retest,. even under ideal conditions there would be some loss.

of course if you see a sudden deterioration of the battery's charge retention then that would probably indicate a failing battery.

hope this helps

Given for Acer Service Centre. They checked this laptop with new main board and battery, but no change. According to them this is not a problem beacuse battery meter showing a diffrent figure actually it is 100%.

Don't know, what they are telling is 100% correct!!!!!!!!

Re: 98% Plugged in, not charging.

Seems odd that it doesnt charge the battery if it detects 98% charge. *If* it is a hardware problem it could be your powersupply.

I suppose it could be a way to not wear out the battery so fast too. If you keep your laptop on AC for days at a time, I suggest you remove the battery once it's fully charged and put it in your fridge. It'll make the battery last longer.

Re: 98% Plugged in, not charging.

The same thing happens to me all the time. It goes to 100% and then some time later it shows 98% even though it has been plugged in the whole time.

Nothing really to worry about.
