Vista only on hard drive

Hello I'm planning on buying Vista ultimate 64 and installing it on MTRON PRO 7500 16GB 3.5" SATAII SSD from this site.

Diamond Point Online - MTRON PRO 7500 16GB 3.5" SATAII SSD (Solid State Drive) - MSP-SATA7535-016

Before i buy this SSD though i decided to check and make sure that it's capacity was large enough and that there would be no problems with all additional apps, programs and files on a second hard drive(WD cavier black 1tb).

Thank you in advance for all assistance.

Ushio

Hi Ushio and welcome to the forums

Unfortunately, I don't think that this drive is suitable for actually installing Vista on. Have a look at the HDD requirements here: Windows Vista Ultimate

If your refering to the below line. It says "15 GB of available space" so i assumed that the 40 GB was mentioned because a sole 20 GB would be pointless by itself (I'm not a where of any HD with capacities between 20 and 40 GB outside of SCSI and SSD) and the average joe rarely has more than 1 HD.

"40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space"

Could anyone else verify this?

Opps forgot.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Dwarf.

I guess you could just squeeze the OS into a 15gb drive but it will be inconvenient. For example there won't be much spare space for restore points (which can only be saved on the same disk as Windows).

You would have to move as much as possible to a real hard disk, including your TEMP folder and all installed apps. That would reduce some of the performance benefits you are hoping for by using a solid state drive.

You can move the paging file to another hard disk but I don't think you can move hiberfil.sys from c:\. That's needed for hibernation and Vista's Sleep function and is always the same size as your total ram.

I suggest you find a SSD with at least 30gb capacity such as the new G.Skill SATA SSDs: SATA

It's probably wiser to wait about six months or a year. Probably by then solid state drives will be cheaper with larger capacities.

Thanks for that link Ushio.
I'm definitely going to wait for 6 months. Probably by then the price per GB capacity will be much better and some of the initial problems with this new technology will be fixed in the next generation of SSDs.
