PS/2 mouse refuses to work under Vista.

Like the title says, my PS/2 mouse refuses to work under Vista Home Premium 32bit. The same mouse works fine under Windows 2000 and Windows XP, but under Vista the mouse gets detected but I get the "Code 10", "This device cannot start." in the device manager.

I checked and there are no resource conflicts, or any other outstanding driver or hardware issues in the system. Also, the proper IRQ is assigned and everything looks fine, except for the fact that it does NOT work and I get the Code 10 code.

Like I said, the mouse works fine in Windows 2000/XP. Right now I'm using a spare wireless USB mouse under Vista until I get this figured out. There are no special drivers or software for this mouse since it's just a simple PS/2 mouse.

Anyone any idea? (I attached a screen grab, see below)

I have a few idea about that

Have you updated your drivers?
Have you tried to view your BIOS set up

Maybe it could have been disabled.

;)

Like I said, there are no special drivers or software for this mouse. All other drivers (motherboard, video, etc) are up to date. Also, same mouse works fine on this same machine under Windows 2000 and XP, so that means there is nothing wrong with BIOS setup.

Same machine under Vista and mouse does not work. As per screen grab.

Because it works in XP and 2000, it's unlikely to be a faulty mouse hardware or a BIOS setting. "This device cannot start (code 10)" is a common message which tells you very little, except it's probably just that the driver is not working for this device.

I agree you don't need to download special drivers, and it should work with one of Vista's default mouse drivers, but it could still be worth trying to refresh the driver attachment to it by uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.

You could try:
In device manager, right click the mouse device > Uninstall. Then reboot.
If the mouse stops working you can still reboot by using the Windows key to show the Start Menu, then use the Tab key and arrow keys to highlight the small arrow button at the bottom right corner of the Start Menu to open the Shutdown menu and select Restart, then press Enter.

After the reboot, the Found New Hardware wizard should install the driver for it.

I've tried something similar to that more than a few times and it did not work. I simply do not understand why it wouldn't work. This is a totally simple piece of hardware and my Vista install is pretty fresh and light. (two months)

Driver appears to be installed fine, even though it shows "Code 10" and it's non-responsive. (Screen grab below)

Interestingly enough, under XP it uses those same drivers (same two files as in screen-shot), except under XP device manager they are different version number.

How frustrating!

One other thing to explore: In device manager click the View menu > View devices by connection. That way you see them as a tree of dependencies. Open branches to find the mouse. Check the item which the mouse is connected to. Does it have an exclamation mark or question mark?

Ah well, it was worth checking. Those other things connected to the PCI standard ISA bridge must be happy or Vista probably wouldn't work at all.

Sorry that didn't turn out to be a useful idea.

I've run out of ideas for things to try. Do let us know if you find a solution.

By the way, you can buy a little adapter which allows you to plug a PS/2 mouse into a USB port. They are quite cheap in electronics stores. Pick the right thing because there's a very similar looking adapter for plugging a USB mouse into a PS/2 port.

Your screenshot shows the mouse with an exclamation triangle which to me means it has a problem and needs attention.
