    Write caching or advanced performance disabled

    Hi. Right before I reinstalled my Vista Ultimate x64, I had an option to select write caching and advanced performance. I got 2x500GB in RAID0, 1x500GB and 1x200GB. None of them shows the option to select write caching. Is there a way to enable this?

    Perhaps you are using an out dated RAID driver? That's the only real difference I could see between then and now.

    But there are no other drivers for my crappy chipset available. The other two drives are not in RAID.

    Hi Slaintrax,

    Welcome to the forums.

    Try this. Right click on the drive and select properties. Then to hardware tab, select the device and select properties again. If you look at the policies tab here everything is grayed out. Go back to the general tab and select 'change settings'. On that policies tab you should be able to change things if you wish.

    Hope this works for you.

    Edit: You may have to click continue at the UAC prompt. Funny, I got no UAC prompt the first time I tried it, but have twice since.

    Don't see anything like that at the general tab. Strange thing is that this is the same DVD i used to install Vista with and before my RAID0 setup everything worked.

    If I understand correctly, there is no need for it on a CD/DVD drive. The reason given for one option or the other is to be able to remove say a memory card or external drive with or without using the 'safely remove hardware' bit. If you have write caching enabled for a card, you use the remove hardware bit in order to avoid losing data. If no caching/optimization, then you can simply remove the hardware with no loss of data.

    I think you misunderstood me. I'm trying to do so on a Samsung HDD drive. I have 2x500GB in RAID0 and two others with 200GB and 500GB. None of them has the option to enable the caching or advanced performance.

    Sorry about that. Take a look at this tutorial by Brink. Hard drive speed boosts[11]=Performance%20Maintenance

    He states that it may not work with a Raid setup. But why not try it.

    I can be disabled for RAID. It is even disabled on my LSI Logic SAS RAID 8708EM2 controller. My RAID controller does adaptive read ahead, write back caching, and direct IO on its own. I usually only see these for single non-raid drives. Enabling it can cause problems on computers that are not rock stable.
