Hello Everybody!
I've got a new PC witn vista on it and i noticed that the edges on every window is blinking and it effects every windows i open espically the search bar in windows.

Well i've searched every where for a solution and I found some. Some say the Display card, some say Bluetooth driver, some say ..... etc etc .
Non of these solution helped me, and i bet som people are still buged with this problem.

Well I've found the solution

Click on start and type "Services" , Scroll down to "Shell Hardware Detection" right click on it and choose "Properties"
Disable it from "Startup type" and Stop the service, a message will tell that another service will be stoped, and it asks you if you want to go on, well if you want to get rid of the blinking, you'd better go on.
After stoping the service you will notice the blinking is gone, but just to make sure, restart the computer and check

I am sorry for not beeing able to attach any pictures to make it easier for some people, But i'm not good with writing threads either.

While I do not doubt this solution has worked for you, it is perhaps a little drastic. If the "Shell Hardware Detection" service is causing this flashing of which you speak, then chances are you have a bit of a problem with a driver. More likely the display.

Just out of curiousity, after applying your solution, do any of your flash drives work? For that matter, do any of your removable devices work after turning off the "Shell Hardware Detection" service?

First of all ! the problem was not with the display driver, I tried every solution i've found on the web but no luck.

Answering your question. Yes i can use all of my flash drives after stoping the "Shell Hardware Detection" service, I can use all three differant flash drives and an external hard disk, everything work just perfect.

Easy there, big guy. I meant no disrespect. Just it's fairly odd to solve a problem of that kind my turning off Shell Hardware Detection (unless, of course, the problem IS with SHD).

Anyways, what I was trying to highlight to you was that I think your problem has not gone away - you've just hidden away. Whatever it was causing that flashing is just not so obvious anymore. I think what you should try and do is figure out which other services rely on SHD, and then disable those instead, provided that doing so won't kill anything of importance.

First of all I want to apologize for my behavior and i don't mean any disrespect, but this is my way of discussing problems and I don't mean to hurt anybodys feelings.

I know that you are right about hiding the problem instead of solving it, but i've tried everything including updating every driver, but i could'nt solve it.
Thank you for pointing out the real problem.
But anyway there are alot of computer users out there who will be happy to stop theire blinking windows.

Thanx again

I have the same problem, and the solution is the same. It points back to Shell Hardware detection. I thought I was going crazy because I couldn't find anyone else with a similar problem, or rather, any one that realized it.

Here is what happens to me. Vista (x64) will constantly steal focus, even if I am in a game like counterstrike or neverwinter nights. Anything I am working on gets the focus stolen by some "background" service. After disabling and turning on each service one at a time I tracked it down to exclusively "Shell Hardware Detection." When that is off, the problem stops, when it is on, it starts up again. alscorpion your right on the money. All the other "fixes" are not the problem in this case. Also, when I try to type something, such as in the "run" area, I can sometimes type about 4 characters until what I am typing is automatically selected and overwritten by the rest of what I have typed. For example, typing "msconfig" would come out like "fig" because by the time I type "fig" this service has activated, stolen service, and selected and deleted the first "mscon" typing. It is not consistant....some times I can get futher, sometimes I get "m" before it does it.

Wierd problem#2: When typing in firefox today (while trying to find the problem) every thing I typed came out backwards. It was the strangest thing. Everytime I would type, the curse would revert to the left of the letter just typed, not the right. NO I don't have anything strange on, yes my machine has been checked and rechecked for malware, spyware, viruses, etc. Here the clencher, turning off "Shell Hardware Detection" makes it all stop. Also, the start/task bar flashes constantly while SHD is on, when it is turned off, everything is back to normal. If I leave SHD off at startup though, I am unable to access ANY CDrom or DVD.

Final problem also effected: The Windows "Shut down dialog" box would disappear before I could even get to it to say ok, or change it to shutdown or restart or anything. Shut off Shell hardware detection? ***FIXES THE PROBLEM***

This is an OBVIOUS bug that I hope Microsoft will take seriously. It makes Vista unusable. Each an every time I restore my PC back from the original factory disks, some update that happens triggers this. I can recreate the problem, and the solution, but a "fixed" service would be nice.

While I do not deny that turning off Shell Hardware Detection has solved your problem, I do believe that this is not an ideal solution, because it sort off like curing the disease by killing the patient.

From the symptoms you describe, it would appear that you have a bad keyboard, or a loose keyboard connector. Try reseating your keyboard connector, or if that does not solve the problem, try updating the drivers for your motherboard.

Even better, try replacing your keyboard with another.

I'm very very very happy that i helped someone who has the same problem.

BTW: you know that you can access the CDrom and DVD by going to "My Computer". Turning off the Shell hardware detection only disables the autorun part and i don't think this is a bigger problem than flashing edges

My friend!! you OBVIOUSLY did not have the same problem.

We are not talking about bad keyboard or restarting the PC

I know you are right about curing the disease by killing the patient, but we are happy that we have got our problem solved
