Are you able to boot the system into "Safe Mode" or "Last Known Good Configuration"? (After you turn on your computer, when POST has completed, but BEFORE Windows starts booting, continually press the <F8> key. When the Windows Boot Menu appears, select Safe Mode)

If "Last Known Good Configuration" does not work, then try Safe Mode. If you can get into safe mode, the try removing the offending update. Failing that, use System Restore to revert back to an earlier state before the update was applied.

In either case, once the system boots normally, go back into Windows Update, and this time perform a Custom Installation, then hide the problem update.

If the update happens to be a driver, then you should really go to you computer or device manufacturers website and download an updated driver from them. I've heard too many "horror stories" of Windows Update supplied drivers causing no end of grief. Although I must admidt that in well over a year, I've never had that particular problem...

Directly from Microsoft:
If the error occurs during system startup, restart your computer, and press F8 at the character-based menu that displays the operating system choices. At the resulting Windows Advanced Options menu, choose the Last Known Good Configuration option. This option is most effective when only one driver or service is added at a time. If this does not resolve the error, try manually removing the offending software. If the system partition is formatted with file allocation table (FAT), use an MS-DOS startup disk to gain access to the computer's hard disk. If the system partition is formatted with NTFS file system, you might be able to use Safe Mode to rename or delete the faulty software. If the faulty software is used as part of the system startup process in Safe Mode, you need to start the computer using the Recovery Console in order to access the file. If a newly installed piece if hardware is suspected, remove it to see if this resolves the issue.

Hello bvories, welcome to Vista forums!

I haven't had an Acer but I believe you can use these instructions to see if a
"MS. System Restore" will help you.

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html?ltr=S

Start with the machine off, press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key. That should take you to the "Recovery Center". It may take more than one attempt to get there, if the first attempt fails.

Once there see if a "System Restore" is an option use a restore date before the update.

Keep us informed!

Ok, heres what has happened. I finally was able to get the system to do something other than give me the BSOD by utilizing the F11 key on start.

Once I did that the system automatically went into repair mode and then started normally, when the computer booted I was showing "configuring updates-2 of 3 complete" Once the third update completed the system shut down, restarted (without any problems), and has run perfectly since.

My only conclussion is that somehow it lost power during the update process and something in the process prevented it from booting normally.

Anyway, all seems fine now and I appreciate everyones help.
