Boot Up Problem!

Hello I've recently had an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ installed on my Dell. Now my computer gets to the progress scroll bar page then it goes black and reboots. I've tried repairing and restoring but both are unsuccessful. I want to avoid a clean install as much as possible. Can someone please help me get my computer working. Any help is appreciated.

Looks like you will need a clean install. Try using ubuntu to copy the data you need on a DVD/USB stick.

you should be able to check it from your bios. or you may want to open your case
and make sure your ( cpu fan ) is running when you start your system. i'm just thinking that maybe when the (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+) was installed thay forgot the plug the cpu fan in and the system is overheating and causing the reboot..

there should be a HWMoniter in your bios .it maybe called system moniter or something like that. also the fan you hear maybe your power supply and not your cpu fan..

I see nothing that shows the temperature of the system, sorry for me being so difficult. If it was overheating then wouldn't it reboot randomly from the BIOS?

i think what's happening is your system is loading all the drivers and at some point it
overheats causing a system shutdown or reboot. i maybe wrong but thats what it sounds like ..it also maybe your (cpu bios) settings did you take a look at them and make sure something is not set to high. also look around in your bios cause the moniter has to be there...

Sorry to dump more questions on you, but they are important:

When the new CPU was installed, was the motherboard changed also? And are the old and new motherboards from different manufacturers?

Did you change from an Intel CPU to the AMD?

I ask the above because usually changes that drastic will inevitably cause am unstable installation. If you still have access to the old mobo and cpu, I'd suggest using them again temporarily to boot from. Then uninstall any and all drivers for the mobo and cpu. If you get "found new hardware" messages again, cancel them.

Once the system is on "generic" drivers, try booting again with the new hardware. If you are lucky, then it should boot ok and go nuts looking for new drivers. I done this a few weeks ago on a customer machine where the motherboard failed and had to be replaced (with a 7 year tech difference between old and new boards)! It took me the better part of 2 days to stabilize his Windows XP install (which I was forbidden from formatting) on the new motherboard. And even so, there was some loss of functionality with some programs that had to be re-installed manually.

My little 2 day "excercise" is not something I'd care to repeat anytime soon. And unless you have something on your hard disk that you absolutely cannot locate to backup (like a program for which you no longer have the install disks), then I'd advise that you backup what you can and format.

Odd though that this is happening to you on Vista. When I switched from an nVidia based Socket 939 Athlon X2 4800+ to an ATI based AM2+ Phenom 9600 Quad in March, my Vista x64 installation transitioned to the new motherboard without incident, and I'm still running it in that config (I'll format in December when I get the time).

No the motherboard was not changed. I went from an AMD Sempron 3400+ to AMD Athlon 64 x2 5400+. I don't have my old cpu. Doesn't the back up back up my programs too?

Ok, let's try and see what the error is. Turn on the computer, and after the POST, but before windows begins to boot, continually press F8 to get to the boot menu. If there is an option to "Disable automatic restart on system failure" (like on XP), then select it. If the system resets now, the error message should stay on screen. Make a note of what it says (as much detail as possible).

From there, we may be able to give further instruction.

Also, try resetting the BIOS to failsafe defaults.

Hi Upinflames,

What was your previous processor? If it was a single core then that would explain your symptoms. A dual core processor will require a different version of the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) to that for a single core. In that case, I recommend a clean installation so that your system is using the correct version of the HAL.

Is there anyway to make it possible to keep all my programs and files through something other than a clean install?

not really with symptoms you have it will be nearly impossible to do as you can't access your desktop and you should take dwarf's advice on this as he is right, if you already had a multicore then this wouldn't be a problem.

also are you 100% certain your motherboard supports dual core?

it could be f11 or delete to access that menu depends on your motherboard

Yes my motherboard supports dual core and im trying to avoid a clean install as much as possible.

Sorry for being so difficult but nothing I found could disable the auto reboot. But is there any type of installation that will reset or change my HAL and keep all of my programs an files.
