Disable touchpad

Hi, I'm new here - glad to have found this forum!

I stumbled upon a post that explained how to do this, but I lost it and apparently there is no "search." I followed the instructions to disable it through Device Manager, found it, but there's no way to disable it that I can see. I have Home Premium.

Thanks for any help.

Hi cattywampus and welcome to Vista Forums

I take it that you are referring to a laptop or a notebook. Check your user manual for details on how to enable/disable the touchpad. As you have not provided any details on your machine (manufacturer, model number), I cannot help you any further as the method used varies. If you reply with the necessary details, I should be able locate some instructions for you.

Incidentally, if you scroll to the very bottom of the page you wil find a section 'Similar Threads'. You might like to check these out to see if they are of any help.

Disabling the Touchpad Driver is under Control Panel.
Control Panel > Mouse
The screen brought up should have a picture of the touchpad on it. Right below that picture is a link that says "Click to change Dell Touchpad settings". (Click the picture). This will bring you to a screen with four different images of touchpads. Click on the one in the upper left hand corner that says "Device Select" and "Button Settings". At the bottom of the screen it brings you to, underneath the picture is an option that says "Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stic when external USB mouse is present". Click to either select or deselect it.

If your touchpad is already disabled, and you don't have a mouse hooked up, try turning off the Wi-Fi catcher on the front of your laptop, next to the headphone jacks (on an Inspiron 1420. I'm not sure where this is on other computers.). This will isolate your computer from all external hardware/networks.

Hope this helps!

G'Day cattywampus,

Checkout your Computer User Guide under "Hotkeys". I've just found that by pressing the keys <Fn>+<F7> on my Acer Aspire Notebook, I can turn the touchpad on and off , at will.

Cheers.

I too couldn't figure out how to disable my compal touchpad. I think Vista SP2 is the culprit. I reinstalled Vista but before I updated to SP2 I installed Synaptics touchpad for Vista and am now able to alter all touchpad settings through Control Panel-Mouse. I've fully updated Windows and all is well, no more annoying typos. Mike.

If you have the synaptic software installed, it's there under mouse. BUT you need the synaptic software not just drives.

Hello Patonb. Yes, that is correct. I see my post was not clear. I didn't mean to say that I actually installed a new touchpad. With SP2 installed I was unable to install Synaptics for Vista touchpad driver. The reinstall of Vista, without updating to SP2, allowed me to install the driver. Mike.
