Broken image files on portable hard disk

Hi everyone. Please help.

My problem is that whenever I transfer image files from my digicam to my portable hard disk, some files get broken. This does not happen when I transfer the image files to the local hard disk.

What I do is transfer the files directly from my memory card to my portable hard disk since I don't have my cable right now.

I tried using other image viewers such as ACDSee and XnView but still, the files can't be opened. I've also tried changing my portable hard disk from a Logitec to an I-O Data but still, the same problem persists. I tried saving the files first on the local hard disk and then moving them to the portable hard disk but to no avail.

Here are my specs:

Laptop: Sony Vaio VGN-SZ55B with Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Portable hard disk: I-O Data HDP 120gb
Digicam: Sony Cybershot DSC-W170
Memory card: Sandisk Memory Stick Pro Duo 1gb

It's frustrating. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello bellerovon, welcome to Vista forums!

Are the external HDDs' are using the NTFS file system and not FAT32?

Keep us informed!

Bare foot kid may be on to something, what are the sizes of the files that are getting broken both before and after.
You may be reaching a limit of size of a file that can be transfered onto the drive.

Hi there Bare Foot Kid and Roy69.

I didn't format both HDDs so the file system is still FAT32. The Logitec HDD was 80gb while the current I-O Data is 120gb. Both HDDs had a lot of free space in them when some of the image files got broken. I don't know if there is a limit to the size of an individual file that can be transferred onto the drive.

The sizes of the image files vary; 485kb, 755kb, 570kb (5 files), and 714kb. Another weird part about it, only some image files get broken, not all of them.

My digicam is a 10.1-megapixel cam, with a JPEG(Exif Ver.2.21) file format, and the sizes range from:
- 10M (3,648 x 2,736)
- 5M (2,592 x 1,944)
- 3M (2,048 x 1,536).

Thanks for trying to help.

Hello bellerovon.

If I were you I would back up anything you didn't want to lose and re-format the drives to the NTFS file system to see if that solves the problem.
