Run Vista Glazz again and restore the original files.

Are you using SP1? Vista Glazz 1.0 only supports non-SP1 whereas Vista Glazz beta 3 supports SP1. You can also manually patch the files yourself. It sounds like your trying to patch the .dll files with the wrong version. I you do it manually, look for a theme that supports SP1 (if you have it) because they will have a copy of the patched files.

It's probably a good idea to manually backup/copy your themeui.dll, uxtheme.dll, shsvcs.dll, AND browseui.dll, shell32.dll. Some themes require the last two files to be patched as well.

You must determine if you have Service Pack 1 installed. Hit WIN+Pause/Break keys to bring up this screen: This is important.

attachment.php

Next go here and download the appropriate version of Vista Glazz:

Downloads | CodeGazer

Version 1.0 if you DON'T have SP1 installed

Version 1.1 beta 3 if you DO have SP1 installed

Next go to C:\Windows\System32 and copy/backup themeui.dll, uxtheme.dll, shsvcs.dll, browseui.dll, shell32.dll (just copy them to another folder. This is just a precautionary measure in case something goes T!TS up)

Next you must take 'ownership' of the files in order to rename them. I reccomend that you download Takeownership.zip from here: (It makes taking ownership MUCH easier)

Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Vista :: the How-To Geek

Then you can run Vista Glazz to patch the files. For more info on how to do it maunually and the correct folder location for downloaded themes:

It would help "smarteyeball" immensely if you posted all the info you found as you followed his steps to try fixing this. Like...do you have Vista SP1 or just Vista for starters?
Were you able to follow all the other steps and such? This is helpful for Mr. "SmartyPantsEyeball" (LOL) in determining any more possible steps for you. "GeniusEye" obviously knows allot about this Glazz theme thingy so let it know what you're doing as you go and The Eye probably knowz more stuff that can help.

I had a few issues with shell32.dll incompatibilities with some themes. Gave me all sorts of errors. I had to use safemode to fix it. That's why it's important to back these files up. Saves on headaches....

What theme are you trying to install BTW?

Smarty-pants/GeniusEye needs to know :sarc: :p

Is it only the theme explorer window that is now giving errors. or explorer in general?

Remove/delete the theme from :

C:\Windows\resources\themes to ensure it's not a bad theme.

If that doesn't work try running SFC to repair your files:

1.Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

2.Type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions

Some Windows Vista functions may not work, or Windows Vista may stop responding

If it that works, before you trying patching again, double check that the recovery disc hasn't reverted back to Non-SP1. Also, make sure you have placed the theme in the correct location. It could be a case that the theme explorer window is looking for a file, can't find it, then sh!ts itself.

Hopefully that will fix the hang.

but

then I go back to previous post when showing me how to patch

and I follow all steps ALL steps, and then I followed instructions on how to install themes and now when I try to open themes panel again it gives me the previous error as pictured in my first post.

Again, what theme are you trying to install? I'd like to download it and have a look at the files. As I said earlier, some themes have their own Shell32.dll and browseui.dll which ARE NOT patched by Vista Glazz and may be incompatible.

Now, lets try to narrow down the culprit:

Did you double check that you are still have SP1 and HAVE NOT reverted back when you used the recovery disc. The SP1 patched files will not work with non-Sp1 and vice versa.

Now,

Do what you did to restore your desktop to a working state.

Instead of using Vista Glazz, I would highly recommend manually copying the pre-patched files into your C:\Windows\system32 folder. (That's all Vista Glazz really does anyway)

x32 SP1 pre-patched files:

6.0.6001.18000_XX.rar

Copy the pre-patched files into your systems32 folder, reboot and then try to access the themes panel BEFORE you install any themes. If the theme panel hangs, it's most likely a problem with one or more of the patched files. Which means you using the wrong files. (Remember, you must take ownership to be able to rename the ORIGINAL files.)

If you've successfully patched the files and CAN access the theme panel, without it hanging, It's most likely a problem with the theme itself or it's location.

If it's the theme itself, try another one.

It may seem frustrating and difficult at first, but once it's done, it will be worth it:)

Let me know how you get on either way.

not trying to use a new theme yet

okay i have followed all steps and yes im still sp1, I have taken control of all files, but when I try to copy patch: uxtheme.dll and shsvcs.dll it says their in use by another program so I can't copy them into the system32 folder, but themeui.dll works fine.

Try renaming uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.org and shsvc.dll to shsvc.org and then copy the patched files into the system32 folder. Click Continue when/if the UAC propmt comes up. Then reboot.

To make sure I wasn't giving you bad advice, I just patched my sisters laptop and I realised I forgot that small step. Sorry :(

I patched my system months ago and was just working from memory. Hopefully this will sort it all out ;)

After you've extracted the Fake Mac files to C:\windows\resources\themes folder, click on the Fake Mac Look.theme file to install it.

There's instructions in the FakeMac folder on how to install the background and cursors.

However, try as I might, I could not get this theme to look like the screenshot. Following the instructions that are in the download, I only managed to get a Windows classic look with this themes colouring. I could not get the custom taskbar to look like the screenshot on the site.

Heres mine:
attachment.php

It's got different colouring, but still looks like the Windows Classic theme. The download did not have .msstyles files.

You'll have to download Rocketdock yourself. (if you haven't already) That one is free and very useful:

RocketDock - About RocketDock

The object bar is a Stardock product and is NOT free:

Stardock.com - Your Edge In Software

When you start downloading and trying out different themes, Vista only shows Aero or basic for ALL the theme names which can get a little confusing. The Vista Desk Hack loads a .dll into your system32 folder which allows you to see what theme is what:
