Diskspace cleanup = strange problem

Hello,

I have a 60 GB HDD on my Vista Home Premium laptop, recently I have filled it up and had only 3 GB free space on it. So, I decided to do a major, major clear up; uninstalling all the programs that I don't regularly use. Which then freed up an extra 4 or 5 GB's. I then went on the Diskspace Clean Up Wizard and was shocked that I had 20 GB's of temp data, so I advanced through the wizard. After it had completed and I only have 13 GB's of free space not the 28 GB I had expected.

On the My Computer dialog Windows claims that C:\ has 13 GB out if 60 GB free. If I go to C:\ and select all, right click, properties it calculates that there are 30 GB's in use. It doesn't take a maths genius to know that 60 - 36 does not equal 13!

What do I do? I want to install a 15 GB game but don't know if I have 24 GB's free or 13?

Please advise,

Thanks,

Hi,

Did you close the Computer window and then reopen it by right clicking Computer >Properties?

Otherwise, you might try emptying the recycle bin, restarting and see if they agree.

Hope it helps

Hello,

The recycle bin is empty and also the computer has been restarted after the disk cleanup. I am wondering if 15 GB's of space disappeared because of this: About 10 months ago I installed Microsoft Flight Simulator which is a 15 GB install, but the installer does not give you a choice of installation directories. So I used an application mover software to move the files and registry references to my external HDD. But I am wondering if Vista is still thinking that the files are on the PC.

Any ideas?

Not sure what that app. mover would have done. You could try typing the name of the flight simulator into the start search box and see what pops up.

You could also try going to your C drive and looking through your folders - it's first worth going to Control Panel (classic view)>Folder Options and under the View tab, dot Show hidden files and folders, then Apply and OK.
