Extract files issue

I was hoping someone could shed some light on this as I am growing increasingly frusterated. I bought my computer new less then a year ago and use it for internet access, word processing, and a little gaming. recently i've had update issues, but even stranger when I attempt to extract a file using vista's in home extraction program(dont have a third party one) I get a message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" which then immediatly is followed by "Windows explorer is restarting." I can not extract files nor move files around that are in these files without this occuring. I went to the problem reports and solutions and get the following message:

Along with that I also got a COM surrogate error this morning when I tried to extact a file. I have no idea whats going on, I called Gateway support, and they are sending me a wipe disc but I'd prefer to just fix this.
Thank you for any input!

Thank you...after uninstalling AVG the extraction worked fine. I just installed that software as it was recommended to me, I will take your advice instead :)

Hi,

If you do want to use Avast , you may not need all the modules running. You can right click the vrdbs ball ( on the left in the notification area) and disable and merge it with the main icon. You could also right click the main "a" ball and scroll up to Stop Provider and turn off anything you are not using e.g. p2p or outlook/exchange, or instant messaging - if you don't do those things.

AVG 8 - the newer one is ok - but many feel avast offers better protection, including for example rootkit scan - and it's free - you just need to re-register every year to get your product key.

Hope this helps

Hi

Yes, the Faulting Module in that crash report points to a dll installed by AVG for Office 200 AV extension, it's probably crashing Explorer as it tries to scan the internals of the zipped files before allowing them to be extracted. As "SIW2" correctly surmises, it's an AVG issue, but it may not be enough to simply change AV programs (also, Avast is a good choice over AVG, I prefer Nod32 but Avast is good)
There could be something else that is causing AVG to crash the shell when scanning zipped archives, so after you uninstall AVG and go to Avast (or whatever you choose), try a zipped archive and let us know if this worked for you.
