System Restore.... Help Please!!!

I was helping a friend with their laptop (Vista Basic) and i decided to do a system restore. Well, everything was going just fine until it landed on the 'Preparing to restore your system' window and a green bar was sliding through a status bar. It stayed on this for 10 mins and it wasn't frozen because i could use everything on the laptop. Now, my friend had to do some work desperately and decided that as i wouldn't be there when it restarted, he would cancel the system restore via the task manager. Now, i had gone and they rang me and told me that. They haven't tried shutdown/start up yet so i don't know if it has caused any problems yet... Please can you tell me if it would have at this stage in the recovery process. Thanks

You could try an earlier restore and let it finish. Can you at least get into the laptop?

No, and i am not trying to shut it down yet, but i think he might later so we'll have to see then, but if you end task of s.r. at that point (1st stage) does it do any harm?

I just read on another vista forum that before it reboots during System Restore, it is only gathering data for after the reboot, so surely it won't do any harm? Can someone back this up please? Thanks
