Solved Set Associations control panel?

Evening all. I just reinstalled Winamp and when I try to download a different skin I get a message saying Vista doesn't know what do with this file and that I need to use the set association control panel.
This is probably a dumb question but where is that? I've searched and I can't find it. John

Hi John,

When you tried to open the skin file, Vista is asking you to set a program to be the default program to use to open the skin file extension type.

I do not thing you will need to set any defaults for the skin file, but instead just select it to be used in the Winamp program's settings.

Hello again shawn,

I've tried everything I can think of. I cannot find anything in Winamp that fits the bill. I tried going through control panel default programs but that didn't help.
I figured I might have a dodgy download of Winamp so I uninstalled and reinstalled it.
Same problem. I can browse through all the skins in Winamp and click download but then I get the Windows doesn't know what to do box.
I recently reinstalled Vista itself but prior to that winamp skins used to automatically appear in the skins browser after download and I could just choose one.
As I say I have delved in every section of the Winamp interface and found nothing. I've tried from the Vista end and managed to associate those files and have them open in Winamp but they just don't.
This is not of earth shattering importance, I can make do with Big Bento, but it's strange and irritating.

John,

After you have downloaded the skin and saved it to where you want it, are you able to select it from WinAmp to apply the skin?

Hi Shawn. I've been having fun and games with Winamp. In answer to your question I could not select it from Winamp as it wouldn't download in the first place.
I've now uninstalled and reinstalled several times and initially had the same problem each time.
Finally seem to have got it right and my favourite theme installed. I was getting corrupt file warnings with some of the installs. Very curious. I've ran every spyware/malware programme I have and can't find anything wrong.
Anyway I've sorted it for now so thanks for your interest once again.

Oh, that would definitely be a problem if it would even download. I'm sure that you did, but did you make sure you were clicking on Save or Save As and not Run when downloading the skin?

I'm happy to hear that you got it sorted out now though. Thank you for posting back your results.

I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Mail on my laptop. All was well until about a month ago when I can no longer open a link sent to me in the email body.
I get this message:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set association control panel.
I went in to Set Default to make sure Windows Mail is set as the default. I also went in to Set association and set the .com to open in Internet Explorer - is this correct? Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.

Hello db54, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Double check to make sure that both Windows Mail and Internet Explorer are set as the Default Programs with all of their associations selected for them.

Thanks Shawn-I will look into this today. I did more research and found that clicking Unblock on the information bar in windows mail may help but I don't have an information bar - do you know how to fix this?

That wouldn't cause the problem that you posted, but you can do it from inside Windows Mail by clicking on Tools, Options, Security tab, and unblock what you like to allow it through.

Set default programs does not show Internet Explorer on the list of programs to set as default??
I also tried "set program access and computer access": this won't allow me to make any changes from custom to microsoft.
Very frustrating :sa:

Try this tutorial to see if it can restore Internet Explorer to the Default Programs list so that you can make it the default program with all of it associations set to it afterwards.

thanks but this is not working either-the programs are set as described in your tutorial. microsoft won't help me because the vista os was set by the retailer (dell)- dell does not offer a "no charge" support.

In that case, you might try a System Restore using a restore point dated before this problem can fix it for you.
