Solved Home Premium to Ultimate Upgrade Horrors

I bought a new HP dv7-1175 yesterday and need to upgrade it to Ultimate from my July 2008 disk from my MSDN subscription (Vista with SP1 x64 and x86). When I put in my (valid) activation code is just says "An error has occurred" and to restart the installation. When I bypass the activation and choose the Ultimate x64 it disables the upgrade option. I do not want to do a fresh install because I know what a driver hassle people are having with that option and I am more of an XP experienced installer.

I have paid through the nose for the MSDN subscription, why doesn't it just let me use it?

Hello Jerry, and welcome to Vista Forums.

When ever you go from a 32 bit Vista to a 64 bit Vista version, or in reverse, it can only be done from a clean install. It just is not compatible or possible to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit by the usual upgrade method. If you have a upgrade Vista installation DVD, then the tutorial below will show you how to do a clean install with it.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68767-clean-install-upgrade-vista.html

If you do not wish to do a clean reinstall of everything, you should be able to upgrade to the 32 bit Ultimate from your current 32 bit version of Vista though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Brink is correct. You must do a fresh install when moving from x86 to x64. You will need to backup all important files off your system before doing the install. Also if you have a upgrade license you will need to follow the link given by Brink to install your OS with as little effort as possible.

However if your product key is for a full version upgrade will become disabled as well and again you will be faced with a full reinstall of Vista.

Good luck.

My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.
Hey guys,

This is not an upgrade from x86 to x64. That would be crazy as I have a 64 bit computer and the manufacturer is not going to install a 32 bit OS.

What I have done is do a new install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit and used the "Windows.old" folder to find the missing device drivers.

I am up and running.

Sorry Jerry. We assumed that you were upgrading from 32 bit. I'm happy to hear that you have it up and running. :geek:

Re: WHY DO?? - Home Premium to Ultimate Upgrade Horrors

I cannot but ask why people try to upgrade even from WIN 95 (yes showing my age I rember installing DOS 3.1 and Windows 3.11) DONT TRY.
Backup your data and download your drivers, then FDISK to remove all information, FDISK again to reinitalise the HDD, Format yes it is a fat format then place the CD with the new O/S and intsall from there.
I have just placed Vista Ult 64bit and found that you still have to FDISK other wise data and curruption is brought across.

Sentar,

I am sorry, but you are making no sense. Microsoft has contracted resellers to sell their products. 90% of the computers you buy today are containing Vista Home (one version or another) In order to do most things we used to do with XP you have to upgrade to Ultimate. Its the way Microsoft makes money.

Also, you "upgrade" in order to retain all of the manufacturers drivers, or else you can not use your computer.

Re:NO WAY - Home Premium to Ultimate Upgrade Horrors

I will never ungrade, I always install a virgin copy.

Yes I know what MS keep advertising UPGRADES, even they will admit (if you get a genunine tech) that is where the problems start.

Given the differances between 32 and 64, look at it this way 32 = 32 spaces for each block/letter/instruction., 64bit = 64 spaces for each block/letter/instruction.
32bit "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" 64bit "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" there only have to be one that does NOT match between the two bits eg: "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxy" and the upgrade will not work.

Now take think about the differances above betweeen each, within millions of lines of code. NOT to mention the differances between the code MS has written and the code for each brand supplier (computer/printer/scanner/application) has to account for to make his (wordprocessr/printer/scanner/camera) and each must match to allow a full working system.

Regards Sentar
