I'm sorry guys... but I have to flame acer.

****ING ACER. I wish the ****ing dumbass companies wouldnt preload computers with useless trials and dumb****. Ever since this computerwas purchased, I've had more problems than Lindsay Lohan had with DUI and drugs.

Heres my problem:
Holy ****. Games, Personalization, System Restore, System Backup (Error code 1068), User Accounts, and Windows Update.
They show up, and then they dissapear right away. Any help please? Virusscan'd with AVG, tested hardware, it's clean, I dont know whats wrong.

On the other side of the coin, I've just purchased an Acer 5720, very good machine for the price.

Upped the ram to 4gig, cleared out anything not needed. Great.

The trick to getting a new computer ( my wife just bought a Toshiba notebook) is just reformat and install the programs you want and drivers.
(or buy Alienware with no bloatware- but even then I reinstall the O/S)

Have had my Acer Aspire notebook [1st ever computer of any kind] since June last year, and major problems have been as a result of my ignorance and errors.

That said, don't expect any assistance from Acer. Their stock 'fix' to most problems seems to be;

"Save and backup all critical Programs and personal Files. - Restore to Factory Default"

I have found more solutions to my Acer problems in this Forum [one Driver problem still outstanding], through the patience and advice from some very well qualified mentors, than I ever received via Acer, Microsoft, Windows Live or NVidia.

The success of finally getting my system to run as I expected it to, I put down to remaining flexible in dealing with this 'tool'. I've listened to those with far greater knowledge than I will ever achieve in this field, and after considering their solutions and advice, generally find that what they recommend is pretty well spot on.

there is an old maxim ' A bad workman always blames his tools '.......User versus Acer, included.

Hi,

With regard to the "stock fix" of the large OEM suppliers I agree totally but I can understand why it happens, the technicians are working to a time constraint. The reset to factory defaults option is the most cost effective solution for the OEM, (not for the user, I will add), It allows the Technician to close the call in the shortest time with a "fixed" in the outcome box.

As for the quality of technician's working for the big companies that is very variable, in cases where I have to deal with these companies I have found that to deal with the first line support is a basic waste of time. If however you can get the call escalated fairly quickly the people you speak to then do know the product.

I have used ACER laptops for quite a few years in a business context and have found that their Business support quite acceptable, as are the machines themselves.

I think there is something of a two tier system in place with Small Office / Home user at the bottom and not getting the service they deserve, I can understand why, the home user is not going to be ordering 50 laptops any time soon, :) but it still isn't right.

My advice to anyone is learn to support your own systems as much as possible, Using sites like these forums, and when you do need further help - find a local technician, recommendation by word of mouth, and use them - a home or small office customer is more important to them.
