ok so i feel like i have had every problem in the book and I have read forums over and over and they have been a great help but this next problem i have found no assistance with.

after installing vista the setup completes and a reboot is necessary so when windows is "starting for the first time" i sit there for about 5min then it loads winbeta again with an error message "setup is unable to start the installation" after it auto reboots winbeta now loads each time with an error that the computer was rebooted or that setup encountered an error and you must start over.

im running a dell 531 amd 64x processor 2gig stick of ram (removed 6gigs for the install) and a gt9800 graphics card no other sound cards or devices connected to the computer. i have tried to install 8 times now its getting very old please help!

Did you upgrade the BIOS to the latest rev? Reset the BIOS to default. Try a different DVD-ROM.

You need to do ISO most likely. Do it at no faster than 2x. Don't do it at high speed burn.

How long have you had this Dell? Is it an Inspiron 531? I have come across a number of posts on usenet about Dell Inspiron 531 mobos not being 64 bit compatible. It's been a few months since I've seen that, though. And most of those people complaining were running an AMD processor (maybe it was an AMD config). I know the hardware in those things change often.

Best thing to do is locate all of the 64 bit drivers from Dell for your machine. Try installing again and use your Dell drivers to install Vista.

I've just went from vista business 32 to x64 on my Inspiron 531(athlon 64x2 5000+). My system came oem with the 32 bit.I found a request form on dells site and asked for the x64 version. They mailed it free of charge.Got it two days latter. Popped in the disk(after my backups of course) reformatted (removed that sneaky recovery hidden partion too) and voila-x64 is great-no install issues whatsoever and when install completed, OS was already activated!
