Free Up Space On Laptop

Would anyone be able to help me free up space that Vista took over and corrupted on a Vista laptop? I have barely any space left on my drives, and all it was, was installing vista that took it up. I figured I'd ask first before I went into detail. I can provide whatever info. you'd like.

Could you give more details on what type of space you mean that Vista had corrupted during installation? Was this space another partition, or a folder or file that is taking up space?

You might run Disk Cleanup to see what it can cleanup for you for now.

Well I fooled around with it awhile ago and I don't see a D: drive now lol, but when it was there it was over 3/4ths full. I didn't know why. I did some tweaks and stuff I found from other websites and whatnot. It still runs extremely slow, it's not even funny.

The stats are:

Vista Home 32-bit
HP Presario C500
Intel Celeron MCP4- 430- 1.73GHz
502MB

I'm guessing the big problem here is the little ammount of RAM.

Anyways, when it was installed and setup the Presario D drive was over 3/4ths full. I don't remember what I did to it but I tweaked some stuff and I don't see the D drive when I go to My Computer. I did the msconfig for startup and everything.

But I guess what I'm asking is there anything I can do to make it run like it should or is 502MB just way too damn small for a Vista laptop?

I'm gonna do the System Restore deletion thing too...

Are you referring to the HP "Factory Image D:" that is listed when you click "Computer" in the start menu?



That is a partition that is used to recover the computer from if it ever has any problems; it is also where the recovery discs are created from. If you have deleted this partition, you have done away with this future option.

I would not delete the D: partition. As Ted posted, it is what will reinstall Vista back to factory defaults if you ever need to.

Well I read what you said about HP Recovery thing and I deleted the recovery partition but it didn't really do much. I guess I got it as fast as it can be for what a piece of junk it is lol.

I hope you have a Vista installation DVD to reinstall Vista with now that you have deleted the recovery partition. :eek:


Since you have deleted the recovery partition, you can extend the C: partition back into the D: partition to make it one drive again for more space on C: . This tutorial will show you how to if needed.

I've got a laptop here (still haven't taken it for sound repair )with similar-ish specs (Pressario F550au) that only has 512mb ram /shared video and it runs like a dog. Vista alone uses up to 70% memory which dosen't leave much memory for applications. Chances are it's relying far too much on the Pagefile which makes the whole shebang slow. So yeah, I'd add more RAM

Try disbaling Aero (if you haven't already). It adds a few ms to speed / response which can actually be noticeable
