OK guys, this is a bit of a story.. so please bare with me. I will give you as much data about the computer as possible, but I dont know much about it.
I use an iBook G4, with OS X 10.4. This computer is able to get high speed internet and therefore is my downloading work horse. It can write CD's but not DVD's
My PC is an old XP machine, from 2002. It is able to burn DVD's and CD's but suffers from dial up syndrome. These are my tools to fix this computer..not much but they get the job done.

My friend has a newish HP 17" laptop. It came with Vista (NO idea what version, home , pro, ultimate, 32 bit , 64 bit, I just know it is vista) installed but NO discs what so ever. I am a mac user, so I felt a little odd about this since Apple included 4 different discs with my computer. She needed to buy some virus protection, so she went to best buy and got Norton Anti virus. After installing NAV, she ran a scan and here is exactly what she told me it said. "It said it found a white horse and asked if I wanted to delete it, I clicked yes and the computer shut off and wont work any more."

She isnt very technically inclined so she gave the computer to me to check it out. Here are the symptoms. Computer will not boot up. It shows a HP logo then it sits at a black screen with a white dash _ flashing. I am able to access BIOS and I ran the only two test, hard drive and memory, and it passed them both with no hitchs. On start up, it gives me a list of function keys like:
F1 is go to BIOS
F2 shows you the boot log or something like that
F11 goes to system recovery
So natually I asked if there is anything she wants to keep, and she says no. I pushed F11 and nothing happens. It just sits there. Nothing. I try again and hold it this time. The computer makes a horrendous ear drum peircing BEEP BEEP BEEP and nothng happens.

Running out of options now arnt I? I dont have a disc to reinstall vista. I dont have a recovery disc to fix vista. I cant access the system recovery thing.

My options seem to be:
Contact HP but they will probably give me the run around or charge me for a disc that should have been included in the first place.
Contact best buy (where she got the computer) but they will probably tell me to go to HP or Geek squad and pork out a few hundred bucks.
Go to a computer repair place but that will cost around $100
--OR
Buy Vista and install it all over again.
And there is a possibility of having to buy a new HD if this damaged vista cant be removed, which is a problem I think I will have.

My mom has a friend who works at best buy and helped fix our home PC mentioned a while ago after its HD went south. I asked him what I should do and he said "Good luck" he was also offered to get paid $50 for fixing it and he didnt take it.

I went to neosmart.com and found some repair disc thing, but I dont think it will work. Im not sure if Norton deleted the boot section, or if it deleted just a single file causing it to not boot. Im not sure if the supposed partitioned repair area thingy is damaged either, since I can not access by pushing the F11 button.

So, does any one have any suggestions? Id install XP onto her machine but I think that requires the HD to be whiped clean and her to buy XP which probably cost the same as Vista. Im not sure what is the right question to ask, is it how screwed is she? Im not sure what to tell her. Should I tell her just send it in and risk the huge fee for something that should have been included (and she probably still wont get a disc) or tell her to sell it then get a Mac Book and run Vista on that?

Thanks for any help!

Hi, ziomatrixacs, welcome to the forums

The disc from neosmart will perform certain repair options on vista but is not a full install disk for vista, to use the disk you need to burn the ISO image downloaded to the disc to create a bootable disk. you then need to adjust the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD drive insert the disk and power up. the disk should then boot up and start a recovery routine starting with a start-up repair and will provide other options if this completes. If you check the Forums here you will find various items on using these repair options

The way HP operates with laptops is they provide a recovery partition on the hard drive which has the option to create backup disks (which as you say are not supplied by default :sa:). If you contact HP they should be able to supply restore discs for that particular model, the costs are normally just shipping so are not to bad. so this would be an option if the repair disk fails.

if you need any further info please post back and I will try to help. :)

the last thing I think to do is trust Best Buy or Geeksquad, have no experience with them - am on other side of the pond ;), but others experiences posted on the net would suggest they are not the best. HP are a major company and although they may be a little lethargic they are normally fairly reliable

Hello ziomatrixacs, welcome to Vista forums!

Have a look at the instructions below; I hope you can get it sorted!

HP Recovery Center

Be advised that this will take the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.
The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.
It may take several attempts to do this, if the first attempt fails, try again.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.
It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.
You want to try system recovery not system restore, unless you have good restore points!

Microsoft include the DVDs with retail versions of Windows but the OEMs decided about 8 years ago they would keep the DVDs against Microsoft`s wishes and instead supply a "Recovery Partition" for OEM home user repairs

"It said it found a white horse and asked if I wanted to delete it, I clicked yes and the computer shut off and wont work any more."
Theres no such thing as a White Horse

Computer will not boot up. It shows a HP logo then it sits at a black screen with a white dash _ flashing. I am able to access BIOS and I ran the only two test, hard drive and memory, and it passed them both with no hitchs. On start up, it gives me a list of function keys like:

This usually means the HDD is malfunctioning and preventing the Laptop from initializing the HDD before Windows is even able to start loading (A problem with some Laptop manufacturer BIOS`s)

Running out of options now arnt I? I dont have a disc to reinstall vista. I dont have a recovery disc to fix vista. I cant access the system recovery thing.

My options seem to be:

Contact best buy (where she got the computer) but they will probably tell me to go to HP or Geek squad and pork out a few hundred bucks.
Go to a computer repair place but that will cost around $100
BestBuy will say contact HP...HP will reinstall Vista for free if the laptop is still under warranty or for about $80 if their Recovery Partition was damaged (like a virus)

--OR
Buy Vista and install it all over again.
And there is a possibility of having to buy a new HD if this damaged vista cant be removed, which is a problem I think I will have.
Windows is Software just like OSX...Unless the Hard Drive itself is damaged you can always remove it...The first thing I did with my Mac Pro was completely remove OSX and install Vista ;)

So, does any one have any suggestions? Id install XP onto her machine but I think that requires the HD to be whiped clean and her to buy XP which probably cost the same as Vista.
XP has reached its LifeCycle, It was removed from store shelfs on June 30, 2008... If its still being sold somewhere its an Illigal copy (Windows Life-Cycle Policy)

She will still need a Vista Disk to use Vista on a MacBook plus you pay the Apple tax for buying one just to use for Windows :(

The f11 option should usually start HP`s customized Vista Install but either the HDD is damaged preventing the HDD from initializing before Windows is even able to begin loading or the bootsector is damaged...

Since you downloaded the Recovery Image from Neosmart and since theres nothing to lose on the HardDrive I suggest giving Startup Repair and System Restore a try first ;)

Just choose Startup Repair first and give it a try and if that fails give System Restore a try (Just note if system restore works the Virus will also be restored unless you choose a restore point created before she was infected...The best Antivirus is FREE antivirus software for Windows with anti-spyware - avast! Home Edition)

Heres a Tutorial on using Startup Repair: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html
Heres one for System Restore, you should find both useful ;)

If you have any problems dont hesitate to ask ;)

There is also one last solution you can try that will get Vista up and running again but I dont think you would like the answer so if Startup Repair and System Restore fail to repair the problem then let me know and I will post the information ;)

My Computer

Ill try tapping the F11 key tonight. Last time I held it and it made a horrible beep beep beep noise.

The laptop doesnt have any valuable data on it, just pictures and games.

If that fails im not sure what to do. I could download a torrent and get vista like that but thats boarder line illegal. (Its legal to have as many copies of the OS as you like, just illegal to use the same SN key (or a stolen/pirated one) on multiple machines correct?)

Ill let you guys know howw it works tonight..

You can download a Vista DVD and use her CDkey found underneath the laptop perfectly legally ;)

create a XP or Linux boot up cd. bootup using the cd and run a whole bunch of scans on the 'broken' hdd, from virus scanning to scandisks to defraging to anti spyware. just run it all. format the hdd if need be but try not to touch the recovery partition. install neosmarts easybcd or vistabootpro to take a look at the mbr and see if its all working. try install ireboot as this program lets u choose what u want to boot up the nxt time u reset your pc. select the recovery partition and reboot.
ive really destoryed my pc a couple of times but its usually always possible to fix any problem with a kubuntu or xp bootup cd.
hope my 2cents helps :]

where could one find the vista DVD? I doubt its on microsoft.com and I want to use a legal source. There is a key on the bottom of the computer I could use, but I dont recall it saying which vista it is.
Ill try everything out tonight, nothing else to do. I need to figure out which of the 10-20 flavors of vista this is. Any ideas on how to do that with out being able to boot up or even see a windows logo?

There is a key on the bottom of the computer I could use, but I dont recall it saying which vista it is.

It usually says what version of Vista it is right above the serial number: Windows Vista <version> OEMact HP. If it's a HP odds on it will either be Basic or Premium.

I don't think it matters what disk you download as the S/N is what defines which version is installed. Good luck with downloading a 'free retail copy'. The only download MS has is a paid for digital download and the only other serious contenders are 'free but not-so legal' OEM copies that are preactivated.

Give Teds advice a proper go as well. And tell your friend to return Norton.:p

    Samsung Story 2TB USB 3.0
Ok, I am at home now. I got the computer and I taped F11 like a mad man to get it to boot into the system recovery mode. Well, nothing happened.

I downloaded both the 32 and 64 bit versions and put them in a USB drive. Had to tape F9 to get it to select the boot device. I got this error:
Disc I/O ERROR
REPLACE THE DISK, AND THEN PRESS ANY KEY
I pressed keys, nothing worked

So I plopped the Windows Vista 64 bit recovery into Toast 9 and burned it to a CD-R (Had to do research on the processor/computer, its a 64 bit home pro version)
Popped it in the Laptop and it said: Install vista? Repair vista? I hit Repair vista and it gave me quite a few options. I hit Repair vista inside that menu and it asked which OS I would like to fix. Nothing appeared. It said if you dont see any, click “load drivers.” I hit that and a bunch of files came up and at the end of each one, it said nothing found, folder empty or it isnt related to the hard ware. I searched around and found D or E drive I think, and it too was empty... searched C drive, got nothing. Searched all of the folders and the only thing that had any contents was the CD!
I clicked next anyways. It said repairing for about 10 minutes then it said restart the computer and see if it works. I restart it, nothing happens. I then hit system recovery and system restore, they both say I need to specify a drive to repair from. There are none showing up. It said “ would you like to report this error to micro soft?” and had a drop down box showing the details. It said something about Missing boot manager

So I am starting to get real P/O’d. I go to “Install vista” and it asks for the SN after warning me a billion times. I hit install and I get “Error code 0x80070002 cannot find E:\Sources\Install.wim”

Now what? It appears as if she completely whipped the HD clean of the HP repair partition and vista. (which I think is BS any ways) There are no discs for her to install Vista with. So now I have to take the risk and try to find Windows Vista home premium 64bit and install that.. Cant be Windows ultimate or one of the other million flavors since I dont have that license.. Eh! I am sticking to Mac’s...The commercials are true :)

Could some one give me a virus free 100% working DVD copy for Win Vista 64 bit home premium? (I also need it to be virus free!) Minus the SN of course, I have a legal one that is on a sticker on the computer. If not , could some one copy their vista file and post it as an .iso so all I have to do is burn it to a CD-R and run it?
I searched around and I found files ranging from 600mb to 4.5gb which just doesnt make sense.. how would I make a 4.5gb file fit in a DVD let alone a CD... eh .. I must agree though ,it is going to be difficult finding a legal copy of vista for free.

It sucks, you try to be legal and you get screwed by having to buy another copy of something you should have gotten in the first place because of people doing illegal activities with the disc so you have to resort to boarder line illegal methods of getting a dag on OS you paid for!

I talked to my friend some more, she said it was either a Trojan horse or a White ghost she saw pop up..

So, my conclusion: Hard disc has been whipped clean or some pointer file got deleted leaving the info on the HD but very difficult to access. There appears to be no HP recovery partition any more either. Only option appears to be to get a vista disk and every one I know including a near by college uses Mac's or XP. There are only a handful of vista machines around here. I guess you could say they are the odd balls :)

    Samsung Story 2TB USB 3.0
Making a bootable USB stick is more involved than simply dragging the files to the drive; here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181538-usb-bootable-vista-installation-flash-thumb-drive.html

Vista trial: Download details: Windows Vista Just enter in your legit key and it's no longer a trial.

DL and either burn the ISO to a DVD or create a bootable USB stick as described in the tutorial.

Hello again.

As it seems that 'all is lost' the best bet may be as barman58 suggested earlier.
Contact HP Here with the model / serial numbers of the machine in question and they will send you a replacement set of the recovery discs for a nominal fee to recover with.

BTW: We only discuss legal options at these forums....;)

Legal options? I want to be legal. As easy as it is to down load a boot leg vista, I am obligated to keep it legal. I thought it was illegal to own more than two Windows OS discs, and have a pirated key and not illegal to share a copy of your OS disc.
I just feel like its BS having to pay any fee to get a DVD that should have been included after their little hard drive partition seems to have been erased by a few mouse clicks by some one trying to protect the computer.

I checked out the making a bootable USB key. First thing it says is I need a Retail vista DVD. So I cant use the download from this link?

Download details: Windows Vista

If I download that, it seems to be the most legal option I have, I would have to burn it to a DVD and not a CD correct? Which means down load with my mac, burn with my PC.

My Computer

I registered with "the man" and had to go back and forth between emails to get microsoft to let me register and view the files.

Then I read:

System Requirements

  • Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP
A virtualization product that supports the VHD format is required to use this virtual machine. Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Virtual Server are provided for free and can be used with these VHD based virtual machines. Please refer to the Virtual Server 2005 R2 System requirements page here.

In addition to the System Requirements for the virtualization product, you will need additional disk and memory resources for running the virtual machine. This VHD is pre-configured to use approximately 10GB of hard disk space and approximately 1024MB of memory.

Instructions

In order to use this evaluation package you will need to have Microsoft® Virtual Server 2005 R2 installed on a physical machine. If you do not have Virtual Server installed you can get this product free of charge from www.microsoft.com/virtualserver. Details of how to install Virtual Server 2005 R2 are included in the download and documentation that accompanies the product.

You will also find a readme document as a part of the download. Please refer to this for additional details on how to extract and use the VHD as a part of the download.

So its not really vista, its a virtual machine that requires me to install more M$ stuff?

All hope seems to be lost :(
