Hi Riptorn, have you tried looking for the usual suspects? ie Virus, malware etc? Any new add-ons, plug-ins? Any new software installed that coincided with the explorer window hanging?

I'd start with a virus/malware scan first.

Avast Free Home edition is one the current top free A/V scanners:

Free antivirus software download

And Spybot S&D is a good free malware scanner:

The home of Spybot-S&D!

If there's no nasties, at least you'll have eliminated one possible cause ;)

Hi Riptorn,

Take a look in Task Manager and see if anything is hogging resources when you get this slow reaction.

Did you try the Repair install - this is not a reformat , it replaces Vista's files without affecting your own programs and settings.

Hope it helps

Hi SIW2,
Thanks, I checked for resource hogs and there are 2
1. Quickbooks Database Manager= 26,000
2.SQL Reorting Service=16,000
Is it safe to set this to manual in the services???, at start-up?

Hi Riptorn,

It's hard to say if either is the culprit - I don't have either of these.

However, it is worth reducing your startup items to the minimum, to see if you can narrow it down - use Windows Defender as per this tutorial.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/79612-startup-programs-enable-disable.html

Restart and check again in Windows Defender - use the drop down tab you used to see startup programs - and select currently running programs.

( Some apps. will reinsert themselves into startup ). Open the apps. that have done this and look for a Settings or Options tab - there may be a box something like Run at startup - make sure it is unchecked and OK it.

Then see if you still have the same problem.

Hope it helps

Hi,

Yes , it won't cause your pc to crash - just that you may need those services to run when you run those applications - they may start when you run the apps. if you set them to manual rather than disabled.

You can disable the indexing by opening computer then right clicking on your drive and uncheck index this drive for faster searching and it will take a while to change the properties of the files and you will have to click on ignore all if a popup comes up.

Thanks Mansrm81,
There was not a tick in the box to index the files, so I ticked the box, applied the attributes, rebooted my computer, only noticed a small improvement to windows explorer??.. this is very annoying to me,as I work a lot on my laptop, and this is slowing me down badly.. Why doesn't it open faster?.. I have 4gb memory.???

Is it possible for you to remove some memory and try 2gb of ram also check in the device manager for this under the drives section for the drive and check the last box.

Also use this program to defrag your registry.

Defragment and Compact the Registry to Speed Up Your Computer

Also don't know if you already have done this but run the disk cleanup tool.
