Vista 64 System lock up

I'm new so not sure if this is in the correct section.

System is:
Mainboard: EVGA nforce 780i SLI Motherboard - A1 Version
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Processor EU80580PJ0606M
CPU Fan: MASSCOOL 8WA741 92mm Ball CPU Cooler
Memory: OCZ SLI-Ready Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (4x2048MB)
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit DSP OEM DVD with Service Pack 1
DVD/Burner: Lite-On LH-20A1S SuperAllwrite SATA DVD Burner
PSU: Ultra X-Pro ULT40029 750-Watt Power Supply
Video: EVGA GeForce 8800 GT Video Card
Case: Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3250310NS 250GB

I built two of these systems around may2008, one for me and one for my wife. The only difference between the two is she has 2 sticks of ram (I have 4 but same memory) and her video card is different (EVGA 640-P2-N829-CR GeForce 8800 GTS SSC Edition 640MB).

From the get go we both had problems with usb devices not waking up after sleep mode. That was fixed by using a usb to ps2 adapter.

Over the course of the past few weeks both of the systems were freezing (locking up might be a better word since everything stops working mouse, keyboard etc etc) and a hard boot was the only way out of it. This seemed to occur around the same time as the latest vista security update (possibly a coincedance).

This week the problem persisted for both pc's and then wednesday night when my wife's went down she hard booted to find that her registry was corrupted (I'm guessing this happened as a result of the hard boot) she put in her windows disk to repair the error only to find that the kernel was then corrupted as well. Windows seemed to fix the kernel problem during repair and she was able to use her system all day the next day with only a minor freeze untill vista installed the update again at which time her pc became hosed once again on reboot.

Now, my pc went down the next day locked up much like hers, but with no corrupt registry or kernel, however I did have to run a recovery from safe mode. I did notice when rebooting several times that the system was hanging on boot trying to recognize the lite-on optical drive. First thing I did when back up in vista was to flash the bios for my mainboard, update the firmware on the optical drive, and updated video card and mboard drivers. So far this seems to be working for me. it's only been a day since these updates so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it keeps working.

I can get a fresh vista install on the wife's pc but am more worried about what is causing the system to freeze up since I'd like to actually fix the problem that started all this rather then keep fixing the issue.

so my question is, is there a problem with older bios' on the 780i and is it possible this bios would mess with certain optical drives?
could the security update have anything to do with making this problem worse?
or is there a chance the latest security update caused a change that turned out critical for this certain optical drive?
anyone else have a problem like this?
any suggestions?

Not a huge tech head so any help is definetly appreicated

no viruses she runs nortan and I have been running kapersky.

Hi

If I remember correctly, I heard of issues with the 780i that was causing all sorts of issues like this. Check out the Nvidia (or EVGA) forums for similar issues for one thing.
I know I remember reading about similar issues as this at Nvidia forums...
I know the 780i chipset was having issues...
I just can't be certain this is what you're experiencing, but I'd scan those forums and also keep us posted here as well. Between us we can hopefully get this sorted out, but I KNOW I remember reading about issues with the 780i based boards similar to this...

so far updating the firmware on the optical drive and flashing the bios has worked for myself. Going to have to reinstall the wife's pc this weekend (unless someone knows how to fix a corrupt kernel). Hopefully the bios/firmware trick works for both of the pc's. I've scanned the evga forums and put a post up.
no info yet, but thanks for the reply.

No prob friend.
Glad it's helped so far, and like I posted...I KNOW that I read about 780i based boards having some kinda issue but I can't recall the exact scenario...sorry.
No tricks for corrupt kernel's either, all I can say at this point is that I hope the updated BIOS is what's needed for your issues. I think it is from what I recall but I can't be certain.
Keep us posted on your progress as it will only help us here recognize this type of thing for future reference.

Hi Leprekahn73, welcome to the board.

Here may be something elementary, check and make sure your SATA to HDD connection is secure; push hard and wiggle. EVGA SATA cables and Seagate HDD connections will come loose easily. See what I have in my system. The one on the Maxtor has never come loose. This thing tortured me for a long, long time until I realized it was the connection problem.

Hope it is this simple for you. Good luck and post back.

Hi bruce2

Yah, SATA connections can be really weak, whoever developed that connector style should be banned from engineering. So many folks have snapped these connectors in drives and if you forget that yours has that little locking thingy and go tugging on it, you can be in for a nasty surprise.
Case modders hate them, as a transfer standard it's a great advance but the connector interface is a serious weak point of SATA. I think it needs a full redesign myself and I know I'm not alone on that...;)

Tell me about it! I had hot glued them to the Seagates and work for a while until I got tire of tugging on it every few days. Last week I replaced them with after market ones with a thicker and stronger snapping thingy. Also the case seems stiffer. They are working ok so far with my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the replies. I was checking the wife's pc and her sata connectors are pretty loose (in that sometimes the system doesn't see the drive and freezes). I'm not 100% sure that is the only problem with the two systems since it now seems I can get mine to crash sometimes by viewing some streaming vids (the vids consistently tank the performance) but I am going to go out and buy some aftermarket sata cables (currently using the ones that shipped with the moboard).

any suggestions on a good sata cable bruce?

Sorry didn't get back sooner. Make sure it is long enough to give some slag to bend because it is stiffer then the one comes with the MB, but not too long to have cable every where. This is what I use and 10" is just right for my connection.
