Some Vista Problems

Hello Everyone
I just recently purchased a new laptop, a nice new Toshiba, with a 160GB hard drive.:D
Anyway, the confusion I have been having is with the hard drive, there split into two, I don't mind this but is there any reason behind this?
Also I don't know if its a regular occurrence with Vista but I am sure that it is overestimating how much Hard Drive space I have used, it says I have used up 47.3 GB out of the 74.3 GB in total which is one of the split drives ( Vista (C:) ).
Does Vista itself take up a heck of a lot of disc space?
My vista was also pre-installed.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Luke, welcome to the Vista Forums.

As for the hard drive being "split in two", you are probably noticing the fact that you have two partitions. Chances are one of the two are quite small, maybe 10 GB at the most. This basically "virtually" splitting the hard drive in two, so Windows notices it as two entirely different sections.

Manufacturers usually create a partition for recovery-use. Basically, if your computer ever crashses, you can set it to boot off that partition (virtual hard drive) to recover Vista. It's sort of like a safety netting to your new laptop.

As for how much Vista takes up by default, 4 GB sounds about right. Especially running Aero, which is quite graphic-heavy, Operating Systems can often take up alot of room. I'd suggest removing any programs by Toshiba that may be taking up room (often called "Bloatware") that you would not use, or that Windows already has built in.

I can suggest more to do to save disc space if you'd like, but I hope I've answered your initial questions.

Hi,

One of the partitions will probably be for recovery purposes, as Thao says.

Check your manual and see if you can create recovery discs - if so, it's best to do that straight away. They are needed if, for example, you can't access the recovery program or partition.

47.3gb does seem a lot for a new machine, you may like to look at these links and see if they are of use

Vista Split Drive

Hey, I think I may have spoken of this before a little bit.
Well this problems got worse!
I have a
Toshiba Laptop with a 160GB hard drive. The whole 160GB is split into two drives : Vista (C: ) and Data (E: )
All my files and programs etc are stored on Vista (C: ) but nothing at all seems to be on Data (E: ) apart from somethings to do with system recovery.
The problem now lies that I have used up all my space, down to the last mb in Vista! & The computer doesn't seem to understand that there is another half of my complete hard drive left!
Is there something i have to do two activate the second drive on paste files to a different location?
Any help will me much appreciated!

Luke
