Size is missing on the folder columns

I have tried everything to display file size in the Windows Explorer folders. I am using Vista version 6 SP1.
My folder is set to view 'all items'. It shows me name, date modified and type. When I right click to display column options, I can't locate size. There are a bunch of other column options, but size is not among them. Any help would be appreciated.

This is what I get for all my file and folder views. The current folder type is using 'document' template, but changing it to 'all items' template removes the tag column only. Size is still not available.

As an aside, the date modified column sorts as text, not date. Argh....:( I am wondering if the problems are related.

Try running a sfc /scannow command to see if that can find and fix any bad system files that may be related.

I would recommend trying what SIW2 suggested to see if that can help.

I am having the same exact problem with both problems...
How "date modified" is sorting. It is sorting for me by month first, then year, rather than by month + year, then the next year. So it would show 12/01/2008, then 12/01/2007 before it gets to November 2008. It also keeps the folders at the top of the list regardless.

AND

How my "size" column has mysteriously disappeared and isn't even an option under "more...".
I read somewhere else that someone suggested going into control panel to fix the date issue, but that hasn't worked (but I haven't rebooted again either).

All I know is I went away for almost 2 weeks, came back and now it doesn't work right. My guess is that an update happened either while I was gone, or over the last few days that changed this. Clearly something happened for two people to have the same issues... I hope someone has an answer???

I still haven't been able to find the solution to the problem. I suspect the only thing I can do is apply a repair install for Vista or reinstall the operating system. Strange...

If anyone tries the repair install, let me know how you make out. I am currently busy and any down time of my computer would be bad.

I just came up with the same problem and did a lot of searching...after finding this post I did find the solution elsewhere.

The problem is "Windows Search 4.0" (kb940157) which installed itself from Windows Update right after I installed SP1. When I uninstalled this the file size and date sort options were available and worked correctly.

No other SP1 problems...so far

That doesn't sound right, because I have Windows Search 4.0 on all my Vista machines, and have not experienced this problem.

I do not doubt that removing WS4.0 somehow restored your date sorting and size columns. Have you tried downloading and installing the standalone Windows Search 4.0 update, and does the problem come back?
