Hi pragadheesh,

Do you have any other CD's Win XP or 2000. You could also use a linux distribution CD
Insert the said cd install up to the point of partitioning format as NTFS or delete the drive, then try again with Vista
Hope this helps

i formatted the drive to NTFs using xp cd, then i tried doing vista installation but still the same problem. the drive is marked as 'unpartitioned space'.
rather what if i try installing xp? will it lead to any driver problems?

Hey pragadheesh,

Xp may or may not run on your laptop I dont know without doing some research about the drivers, But it would be better to use Vista.

I believe that I have found the answer, Instead of using the XP cd to just format the drive to ntfs, my bad. You need to delete the drive and then format it as new. (Partition Magic has broken the format) after which Vista should be able to see the drive again.

I hope this helps

Ps should you decide to install XP you can always ask if you find any problems

thanks a lot pooch. i successfully installed vista following your steps.
but after deleting the drive, i created a new partition of 25gb and installed vista in it. now i'm left with 200gb of unpartitioned space.:( i cannot format or partition it.
when i try to do so using xp cd or in vista disk mgmt, it says "Cannot create new partition in the space as maximum number of partitions already exist on the disk". why is this problem? is it taht i can have only two drives(a rescue drive and one for os)?
how can i make use of this unpartitoned space?

Hi. Has anyone figured out this problem. I am a novice and trying to reinstall vista as there was some problem and I deleted it. Now when I try to install I get the message "Failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space [error 0x8004240f].

As I said, I am a novice.. so please give step by step instructions.

thank you

Shumon
