Installing enterprise edition

I am new to this site so I hope I have picked the right forum. I work online from home and recently upgraded to vista x64. - My previous XP Pro crashed so I bought a new system.

A lot of the appls that I use are 32bit and will not work on my pc. I got round this by installing a kvm to a steam powered laptop. Ideally I would like to run virtual pc and load XP Pro as an image.

When I tried to download Virtual PC, I found that it is not compatible with Home Premium so I have to upgrade. My son offered to take me onto his Vista x64 enterprise licence but I have a couple of questions before I do that.

I would like the option to back out of the enterprise edition and revert to my own licence if necessary. When I got this PC it didn't come with any system discs, only a factory image on a partition. I have since created recovery disks for it.

Are the recovery discs what I need to restore to the original configuration?
If not, what is the correct strategy to take?

many thanks in anticipation

As long as you don't wipe your recovery partition, you can just revert to your image and license by doing a restore.
To answer your question, yes the recovery discs are what you need to restore the original configuration.

The only thing about Home premium to enterprise, you lose the media functionality (Media center, media center extenders, HD movie maker, etc.) As long as you're not going to need these then you're set. Otherwise, you may want to go to ultimate.

Hope that helps.

Hi Lucianp and welcome to Vista Forums

Contrary to what it says, Virtual PC 2007 DOES work on Vista Home Premium (indeed, I have run it myself on that OS). However, if you do want to upgrade I recommend the Ultimate version so that you do not lose any functionality.

I need to have these so I think you're right. Upgrade to Ultimate.

I'd actually bought it but my son said if I use his business licence, I can take Ultimate back to the store. Glad I held on to it till I got some answers.

Thanks

Thanks

thanks for the reply Dwarf,
I don't want to upgrade but I have to if I want Virtual PC 2007.

I tried to download it from MS but it just said that I had the wrong version. I'll take another look to see if I can get it down before I do anything else. An upgrade is $220

Did you have any issues running it on Premium?

thanks

Hi Lucianp,

No issues at all, other than it not being officially supported. I used it to install a copy of Windows 98SE for some educational programs that wouldn't even install in Vista, let alone run, even using compatiblilty mode.
Have a browse through the following forum for more assistance on VPC2007: Virtual PC - Vista Forums

Note that when I ran it on Home Premium, I was using a 32-bit OS. I don't know if the problem is caused by you having a 64-bit version, perhaps someone could enlighten us if that is indeed the case. Incidentally, I have it installed on my current OS (Ultimate 64-bit SP1) without any problems.

What can I say except wow!

If I had known this was available for home pc's, I would never have wasted my time with kvm's and steam driven laptops. Now my work load is back up to the speed it was before I got x64.

I now have XP Pro on Vista Premium x64.

thanks Dwarf et al.
