Administrator Permission

When I try to organize the folders on my desktop I get the following pop up message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to move to this folder" and when I press CONTINUE I get another pop up that says "Windows needs permission to continue" and then you press CONTINUE another pop up says "You need permission to perform this action" and then I press "TRY AGAIN" to no avail.

This is a common occurrence and I have to restart the computer to be able to move this folder and then it doesn't always work. This is extremely frustrating. I have NEVER had this issue with Windows XP.

I have tried the cmd.exe method without any success. Has anyone had success resolving this issue? Please help.

Re: Administrator Permission

Hello stormiii, welcome to Vista forums!

Are you attempting this in a "Standard User" or an "Standard Administrator" account?

Also have you tried to Take Ownership of the files?

Keep us informed1

Re: Administrator Permission

I am not extremely computer literate so help me out here when you ask if I am using it as a "Standard User" or "Standard Administrator." I automatically assumed that I was using it as administrator because I don't have this pc set up for guest users. Can you tell me how to determine how I am signed in?

Re: Administrator Permission

Hello.

Are you using the account you had to set up when you first activated Windows? If so that is the default administrator account.

Re: Administrator Permission

Hi storm ,

For future reference you can find details of the accounts on your pc by clicking Start>Control Panel>User Accounts

Hope it helps

Re: Administrator Permission

Yes, I have only had the pc for two months and have never had another account set up for it so I am guess I am using the administrator account. When I follow the steps posted it has my name only and then it says Administrator Password Protected.

Re: Administrator Permission

Yes you are the standard Admin. You could download the .reg file from the tutorial to add Take Ownership to right click context menu, it's very handy.

Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Vista :: the How-To Geek

Vista does this to protect you from deleting/moving things it thinks you might need, so it needs to be used carefully.

Hope it helps
