ATI graphics settings

I've connected my LCD TV to my computer through the VGA port. When I go to the ATI Catalyst control center to set up the connection, I can get the desktop background to be displayed on the TV but not the desktop icons and menu bar. I know there is a box I need to check because I've done it before but i can't seem to find it. It's possible it's not in the graphics card. How do I get the desktop menu bar and Icons to show up on the TV so I can use it as a second monitor?

You need to select clone mode, then it will show the same on both the TV and the monitor.

BTW with the TV connected via VGA are you limited to 1024x768, or is it allowing you to run at the TV's default resolution? If it is only at 1024x768 and you want to run it at the TV's native resolution, if you can use the s-video/component dongle that should have come with your card and use a component cable, and then you will be able to run the TV at its native resolution.

When I select "clone desktop 3 with monitor", it automatically disables "desktop 4" (TV) and the TV screen goes black.

The ATI graphics card is allowing desktop 4 a max resolution of 1400X1050. The native resolution of the TV is 1920X1080.

Which card do you have? I know that with my 1950 Pro if I hook up my 32" LCD TV with anything other than the adapter and component cables I mentioned previously, it is detected by the card as a regular TV with limited resolution options. Once I connect it with the adapter and cable it is detected as a HDTV with the full range of support HD resolutions.

Don't hook my TV up too often as I am running dual monitors, and you can only output to two devices at a time from a single card (the Matrox Triple Head doesn't count). I have them set to extended mode in the ATI settings and I use ultramon,

Realtime Soft UltraMon

to setup everything else. One real nice feature of Ultramon is what they call the "Smart Taskbar",

• Smart Taskbar
UltraMon adds an additional taskbar for each secondary monitor, and each taskbar only shows tasks from the monitor it is on. This makes managing lots of open applications much easier, and when activating an application, you'll know on which monitor it will appear.

Not free, but well worth it for the extra functionality (that really should be part of Windows itself IMO) it adds.

When I select "clone desktop 3 with monitor", it automatically disables "desktop 4"

Are you running dual monitors as well as trying to run the TV?

No I'm not running dual monitors....I had it working at one time through the VGA port. I 'm not sure if this has any thing to do with it but there is a "Mirror" setting in the "New Display Detected" dialog box, but I can't even seem to find it.

In the device manager listed under Display Adapters is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family.
