Hi

This depends on a few things really.
Like, is this a Home Built machine or an OEM like HP or Dell?

If it's an OEM machine, did you make your Recovery Disks, or were recovery disks shipped with the machine?

My first question tho is, why do you need to do this? What kind of troubles are you having to make you want to do this? There may be other solutions to your problems than going thru a full recovery so post about what troubles you have, your system specs, and any error messages you've received (in full) and we'll see what we can do

My main problem is getting the Icons and Menu bar to show up on a second display. I have my computer connected to to my LCD TV via the VGA port. I have the ATI HD Radeon 3650 graphics card, which has a "clone" option but when I select it the TV screen just goes to black. Plus, I can't access the "New Display Connected" dialog box. Is there some setting in Vista I need to change? Would connecting the TV via the DisplayPort solve this problem?

Hi pinkfloyd (my all time FAVE band BTW)

Well, that certainly won't warrant a full restore so let's forget about that for now.
I'm not familiar with that ATI Radeon card you have, I have a dual DVI Nvidia card myself with 2 - 22" LCD's and in the Nvidia control panel I have mine set up as "Independent" display so I have different things on each.

Are you trying to use them as independent displays or do you want both to show the same thing? There isn't anything in Vista for this since this is completely controlled by the graphics driver. It also won't hurt to try switching the output to the TV to see if that works, at least I can't see any reason why it would hurt if they both support the connector interface.

I would also try the TV with maybe S-Video if the ATI card supports that. Make sure you have the most recent ATI driver for your card and read the instructions for it carefully as most likely the answer is somewhere in there.
Let us know what you try, what works and what doesn't please, and hopefully someone with experience in this ATI card pops in to help. I'll see if any of the other staff has this card and 2 displays, and get them to pop in if possible

Hi Chappy, thanks for responding....Pink Floyd is running a very close second to The Doors as my all time favorite band. I've seen Floyd twice, once in 1988 and again in 1994...their stage show was nothing short of amazing.

I want to use my LCD TV as a second computer screen, both of them displaying the same thing. I want the TV to be my 40" computer screen. I know it will work because at one time I had it working, but for some reason I can't seem to get the settings back the way they were. I downloaded the latest ATI drivers and then it didn't work, so I restored the computer back to before the drivers were installed and it still didn't work. It happened after I shut the TV and computer off, when I turned them both back on it seemed to be "reset" back to before I connected them together.

My computer is a Lenovo W500. Their are only two video outputs on the computer, VGA and DisplayPort. In the device manager, under display adapters, it lists ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family.
Access to the graphics settings it through the ATI Catalyst Control Center.

I'll keep trying different things, searching for a solution, I'll post whatever I come up with. Thanks Chappy.

No Prob PF

I 1st saw Floyd in 1970, they played our brand new Performing Arts center before it was officially open actually, amazing experience with the original Floyd members. Then again in 1988 (I think..) and I wish I could have gone to more of their concerts but oh well..

Normally I would stick with the most current drivers for your card.
I know it's just a small setting somewhere that you're missing but since I don't have that card and control panlel it uses, I have no idea what it may be..sorry dude. It may even be in the TV's input settings, have you tried them too?

Since my last post I had to do a clean install as a result of other issues......The weird thing is that now in the device manager it lists the ATI card as the FireGL V5700. I can get the desktop on both displays using both graphics cards. The problem I'm having now is that it won't allow me to set the resolution higher than 1650X1050. This means the picture does not fill the entire TV screen (even when I set the TV to Full2 mode). Is this because my connection is through VGA? How do I get the picture to fill the entire TV screen at a high resolution? (it works when I set the resolution to 1024X768)

My Computer

Hi PF

Well, VGA can handle well up to a 2048 x 1536 but since it's an analog connection the image can degrade as the length of cable increases, and the higher resolutions may not be able to display properly.
I don't think that's your problem here, I think it's still just a settings issue. Have you looked at the ATI forums for help with this?

If you are talking about an IBM Thinkpad, try each display device by itself using only ONE display at a time. I mean do not use the laptop's own LCD at the same time.

I have seen issues with Thinkpad external VGA ports (in particular) driving external displays even with short 6 foot cables. Cables are also an issue when it comes to external displays.

You should be able to switch from "Laptop display only" to "Both" to "External Only". If External Only mode works with a short cable, the solution would be a DA (Distribution Amp). The DA presents a very high impedance (light load) to the external port and provides enough drive to run external displays.
