Solved Recover Local Folders

I don't know what the Folder or File names are for my Local Folders in Vista Mail.

My old HD began making noises so I bought a new 750KB FireAgent last week,
(ST307504FPA1E3-RK), and Backed it up immediately, before Dell replaced it.
I had my HD set with 4 partitions and Backed them up individually: C-OS & important
programs, D-Vista's Recovery, E-non-critical programs , F-Data.

There were other problems in the C: OS drive so I could not just restore it as I had to use the Dell reinstallation CD.

I have restored most folders and files, BUT my Vista Mail "Local Folders" with all the subfolders and messages did not restore. If I look in I:/backup/CarlP,
I can see C, D, E, F. But, I don't know what I'm looking for, don't know what they would be called, where they are, and how to get them back. It's imperative that I DO restore the information stored in the messages.

Help Please?

Now that I know what to look for, I spent the day Searching for Windows mail and Local Folders, in all four of the Partition Drives, to no avail. It's just like they were not included in the backup I did.

Hi Carl,

If you backed up C:, then they should be there under your users folder. Don't think you need to 'show hidden files' to see them, but might give a try just in case. If they are not there, then maybe they didn't get backed up for some reason. What backup software did you use?

Hi Gary,

I used whatever software came with FireAgent. I did it as soon as it was recognized: i.e. Seagate> BU. The only thing different that I did rather than a total BU of the computer, was to do it Partition/Drive one at a time for: C, D, E, & F, which comprise the total computer.

I don't know the software, so can't help you there. Have you made sure that 'show hidden files and folders' is ticked in windows explorer? You do need this ticked for them to display. If that was not ticked when you made the backups, they may not have been copied. Probably time consuming, but you might try doing a search on the backup for 'local folders' or *.eml. If neither of those things work, then I can only suggest trying some recovery software. Don't know if it will be able to find anything though as the drive was probably reformatted as part of the reinstall process. You could try 'Recuva'. A link here: http://www.vistax64.com/software/115872-free-software-list-vista.html

If that doesn't work and finding them is very important then the only other thing I know is to find a lab that can recover the files. This is expensive, but possible. Good luck.

Please keep us posted.

Yes I have the hidden files unhidden now, but i'm not positive if it was on the old HD. I have done massive searches for local folders to now avail. I just did one for *.eml and found a few odds and ends but no local folders. The old HD has gone back to Dell so that's out. I'll try some recovery software on the new USD HD.

Again, Thanks,

Carl

Hi Carl,

Unfortunately, since the emails never made it to the new HD, I'm afraid there will be nothing there for it to recover. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I can't tell if they did hidden, or not, but Recuva is looking for them right now. You tried and I really appreciate you taking the time.

Best Regards, Carl

If I find them , or a have some 3 month old on a different USB, Can I combine them with what I have DL in the last week since I got the new HD.
